I am thrilled that one of my longtime guitar heroes, Brian May of Queen, was knighted by HRH King Charles!

In my mind, this is what they played before and during the ceremony!!

I'm a huge fan of the first 5 classic Queen albums. Brian May is a brilliant composer and a true guitar innovator. But his musical acumen is just a single facet of Brian May's genius. Even prior to starting his career with Queen he studied math and science. After Queen's heyday he returned to university and finished his doctorate in astrophysics. His doctoral dissertation is a painstaking study of the effects of galactic dust on deep field imaging which apparently has ramifications for current astromical study.

I knew about his academic work in astrophysics. What I didn't know was he had taken a keen interest in stereoscopics, the creation of 3d images by taking images of the same object or scene from different perspectives and viewing simultaneously through special lenses. He has effectively resurrected LSC: The London Stereoscope Company which was founded in the 1850's and operated in it original form until 1930. He has released multiple books of stereoscopic images. One such book I just recently received. It is a combination of his love for astronomy and stereoscopics that he published with astronomer David Eichler and astrophotographer JP Metsavainio, a fascinating collection of 3d images of deep space objects.

Brian May is a genius and a true eclectic. Very few are as deserving of this honor, or any other honor bestowed upon them. Congratulations, Sir Brian.

^Thank you!  I've corresponded with Sir Brian (Dr. May) about climate change and UK badger conservation, and his work in astronomy inspired me as a university student (I had a dual minor in chemistry and astronomy).  I didn't know about stereoscopics.   Please see one of our emails....(note, those email addresses no longer function!)  By being knighted, he implies that now, he has more power to advocate for causes he cherishes (saving the UK badgers, which are being slaughtered needlessly by Brit farmers).

Followup:  Here's an article about Sir Brian's advocacy.  Brilliant!  I lived & worked in Devon, UK in the 1990s and participated in conservation of the hedgerow ecosystem and their flora/fauna (hedge-hogs), but didn't know about the badgers and other issues.  Sir Brian can now take these on with added credibility and the help of the Crown!

He is also partly responsible (along with F Mercury) for the as yet unchallenged assertion that the Earth's rotation is caused by the ample posteriors of female humans.
