This is my little tribute to the arcane monster known as the Mellotron.

My favorite instrument, with the guitar a close second.

I thought it'd be nice to know if some other people feel the same about this gorgeous musical invention.

You can also post your favorite Mellotron songs if you wish.

Here are my top choices and they're all by my most beloved band, King Crimson...

1. Sailor's Tale
2. In The Wake Of Poseidon
3. In The Court Of The Crimson King
4. Starless
5. Cirkus

Now it's your turn...

Feel free to dissent and add your opinions about what instrument personifies prog too.

damnit...i chose mellotron...but i want to change it to the tambourine...

I was inspired by James LaBrie's tambourine work in DT's Live shows, ITS BRILLIANT

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

I am a huge Tronmaniac, especially the choir-section sounds so impressive and compelling!

My favorite Mellotron tracks are (tonight):

In the court of the crimson king-King Crimson

Zarathrustra-Museo Rosenbach

Tide-Greenslade

Alanderie-Fantasy

Child of the universe-BJH

Karelia-Anekdoten

But I also love other vintage keyboards like the Minimoog and Yamaha CS80 en GX-1 synthesizer, the Hohner D6 clavinet, Hammond B3 organ, Elka-string-ensemble, to name a few. They all contributed so much to the wonderful progrock sound from the unsurpassed Seventies!

one of my favorite 'featured' mellotron songs was Mike Pinder's The Voyage, sandwiched between the two parts of Have You Heard on the Moody Blues album On the Threshold of a Dream.

Mellotron = definitive prog instrument.

minimoog - #2

Rickenbacker bass - #3

Space is dark it is so endless
When you're lost it's so relentless
It is so big, it is small

Wow, that's enlightening!

Now, cut the cr*ap and tell us what song by GG features that "instrument"?

Mellotron. Moog is good too.

Moogs and mellotrons. To abbreviate it: moogtrons.

oscillator ribbon controler, played via an effect device
with multiple tape frames and amplified by a trio of
leslie cabinets.
