CHERRY RED PRESS RELEASE - NEW STRAWBS ALBUM UNDER WAY  NEW

David Cousins, leader of innovative rock band Strawbs, reveals that work is in progress for a new album to be released by Esoteric/Cherry Red in 2023.

Following the five-star reviews and chart-topping success of Settlement, fans around the world were disappointed when live Strawbs shows were cancelled for the foreseeable future.

David says: “In August last year I was diagnosed with a malignant tumour that required major surgery to remove it. My consultant advised me that the recovery period would be six months, which was the reason for me having to withdraw from all live Strawbs shows. I am pleased that the procedure was successful and I must express my gratitude to the National Health Service (NHS) team who continue to monitor my progress.”

‘Settlement’ was influenced by the strange atmosphere of the Covid-19 lockdowns. The new Strawbs album will again be produced by Blue Weaver who says that some songs he’s heard so far reflect the challenges of the past year, while others look at today’s uncertainty and social unrest.

David Cousins goes on to say: “I’d like to thank our Strawbs friends for their patience and understanding. One of the new songs is called - ‘Wiser Now’.” We all are.

Wonderful news!  Settlement was their best in years, imo.  And to hear that David is recovered is some icing on the cake.

super!  Like Nicky said, "Settlement" was their best in years, perhaps IMO since Ghosts.  Strawbs' fans are extremely lucky to have picked such a prolific group to follow.

sobering yet indomitable message from Dave Cousins of Strawbs posted on Strawbs facebook group yesterday.  Emphasis is mine:

In November 2021, shortly after ‘Rock Against Cancer’, I had a major cancer procedure. I was very lucky that my recovery went well, but it still took a year before I began to feel anything like my old self. Anyway - just before last Christmas I was cheered up by being offered a slot at Fairport’s Cropredy Festival, which I accepted. The organisers were made clear that this would be my last stage appearance with ‘Strawbs past and present’.
Unfortunately, in January, a routine blood test revealed that my immune system is severely compromised. The consultant haematologist advised my GP: “Mr Cousins needs to avoid crowded places and people with coughs. He also needs to report any fever or infection to casualty immediately”. At the end of March, I was eventually diagnosed with a subtype of MDS, which is a complicated disease to understand.
I asked my consultant’s advice about the Cropredy Festival. He strongly advised me to avoid mixing in confined spaces such as rehearsal rooms. On stage, in the open-air at Cropredy, I’ll have to be very careful and keep well apart. After the show I won’t be able to meet and greet, sign records, shake hands, or hug anyone - sorry! I’ve made the organisers of Cropredy aware and they are understanding and supportive.
As for the future? I’ll have to be extremely careful in avoiding infections for the rest of my life. It won’t get better, but it won’t stop me writing new songs and I intend to carry on recording.
Thank you for all the good times and the memories. I’d rather you don’t write to say how sorry you are to hear all this. Just put a record on, pour yourself a glass and have one with me.

Yes, we're all getting older and compromised in one way or another, unfortunately. I'm just glad that Dave is alive and kicking and I would be fine with him retiring from all music endeavors and to just enjoy these golden years. I have more than enough excellent Strawbs' material to last me a lifetime. Dave and the Strawbs will always be one of my favorite groups, and I wish him all the best.

Hi,

As I get older, and see so many "friends" in the musicians I have appreciated for so long fall away, it is with a wonderful smile to the universe when I hear something like this ... so many have fallen, even though it is expected sometimes, but the spirit within that helped us all so much, is still there, and "SETTLEMENT" is a softer album, with the harder rock edges just about gone, but instead of us feeling that something is missing, instead we get something stronger and cleaner, and probably better centered than before.

Welcome back Dave, and hopefully we get to enjoy your poetry for a lot longer ... it is a nice breadth of fresh air next to the commercial tastes out there. Welcome "back" Strawbs ... as if you had ever left us without a goodbye song ...

and now more details about the upcoming album

We are proud to announce the superb new album 'The Magic Of It All' - Released on CD, vinyl and digitally on the 14th July.
Pre-order the album here: cherryred.co/StrawbsTheMagicOfItAll
Strawbs were high in the charts with ‘Grave New World’ and ‘Bursting at the Seams’ fifty years ago, in the early 1970s. It coincided with a pivotal moment in the struggle for freedom in South Africa when students and workers launched a new wave of resistance against so-called “resettlement”. The resistance in South Africa identified with Strawbs songs, especially ‘Part of the Union’, ‘Lay Down’, and ‘New World’. Strawbs albums sold well and became highly prized.
Recognising this, South African documentary maker, Niel van Deventer, approached David Cousins with the idea of producing a documentary about Strawbs and the band’s influence around the world. Niel wanted to film while new songs were being recorded in a Cape Town studio. David Cousins came up with a bunch of his finest songs, Blue Weaver flew over to produce the sessions and co-write some of the songs, while John Ford joined in with his contribution to the songs from New York.
The album is called ‘The Magic Of It All’ - 11 brand-new songs recorded at the ‘Academy of Sound Engineering’ in Cape Town in September 2022. Engineer Peter Pearlson worked with Paul Simon when he was recording South African musicians for the ‘Graceland’ album. The South African musicians on this album include Mauritz Lotz, Schalk Joubert, Kevin Gibson, Byron Abrahams, Simangele Mashazi, Marzia Barry and Luna Paige. Cathryn Craig and Nicole Tee joined the singers from the UK.
‘The Magic Of It All’ is released simultaneously on vinyl, CD, download and streaming by Cherry Red on 14 July. The documentary ‘The Magic Of It All’ will be released later this year.

Cherry Red press release announces the new Strawbs album, to be released on CD, vinyl and download on 14 Jul 2023.

"THE MAGIC OF IT ALL

The new Strawbs studio album was recorded in Cape Town in 2022.
David Cousins, Blue Weaver, and John Ford from classic 1970s Strawbs
join with the some of the finest musicians and singers in South Africa.

Strawbs were high in the charts with Grave New World and Bursting at the Seams fifty years ago in the early 1970s. It coincided with a pivotal moment in the struggle for freedom in South Africa when students and workers launched a new wave of resistance against so-called “resettlement”. The resistance in South Africa identified with Strawbs songs, especially "Part of the Union", "Lay Down", and "New World". Strawbs albums sold well and became highly prized.

Niel wanted to film while new songs were being recorded in a Cape Town studio. David Cousins came up with a bunch of his finest songs, Blue Weaver flew over to produce the sessions and co-write some of the songs, while John Ford joined in with his contribution to the songs from New York.

The album is called The Magic Of It All - 11 brand-new songs recorded at the Academy of Sound Engineering in Cape Town in Sep 2022. Engineer Peter Pearlson worked with Paul Simon when he was recording South African musicians for the Graceland album. The South African musicians on this album include Mauritz Lotz, Schalk Joubert, Kevin Gibson, Byron Abrahams, Simangele Mashazi, Marzia Barry and Luna Paige. Cathryn Craig and Nicole Tee joined the singers from the UK.

David Cousins says: “The Academy of Sound Engineering is a college for training young audio engineers. We were surrounded by several students every day while we recorded, and they were involved in setting up the studio and lining up the desk. They learned a lot – and so did I. It was magic!”

Blue Weaver says: “It really was 'Magic' working in Cape Town especially having such great musicians and an engineer who made my job very easy. It was wonderful also to see how the students reacted to our ways of recording live in the studio and to answer their questions. I‘m looking forward to seeing the documentary especially the "fly on the wall" video recordings that were made during the sessions.“

The Magic Of It All is released simultaneously on vinyl, CD and download by Cherry Red on 14 July. The documentary "The Magic Of It All" will be released later this year."

I do agree on the cover...the title is also a tad more optimistic than most Strawbs' fare
