Romantic Warrior is what I associated fusion with back was when I was certain it was the worst music made by mankind. It didn't really sound to me like it's made by human beings really. In retrospect I suppose a highly advanced "jazz-fusion-generator" could come up with something like this. The medieval/fantasy songtitles however appears to have been made by a progrock-title-generator. Unfortunatly the latter was exactly what I found so attractive in my formative years. So when I stumbled over the (to me) equally attractive cover art in the cheap bins, I was probably hoping for was some Gryphon/Jethro Tull-like music (without having heard of any of them yet). For a long time I was certain fusion was like this and Mezzoforte/Tower of Power - that I had heard on the radio/TV. Sterile and show-offy stuff that "says nothing to me about my life". It set me back for years, jazzwise:). Now I can appreciate the chops it takes to pull this off, but I still understand my younger self. Needless to say I'm much more of a jazz-flute and latin-flavoured kind of Return to Forever-fan.

Overlooked gem here. A 1968 Corea-piece gets a 1972 fusion update, but first included as a bonus on the 1998 re-release of Light as a Feather. It wouldn't have sounded out of place on Miles Davis first few semi-fusion styled albums (Filles De Kilimanjaro, Miles in The Sky...). Probably among my ten favorites, had I remembered it |
