A statement from Nick Shelton, the band’s manager:

A STATEMENT FROM BIG BIG TRAIN MANAGER NICK SHILTON

As the promotional campaign for the Welcome To The Planet album approaches an end, we feel that the time is right to address the question of the future of Big Big Train following David Longdon’s death.

Several years ago David expressed the clear wish that if ever he were not around, he would want Big Big Train to continue. Of course none of us foresaw the tragic situation that happened in November last year.

After careful consideration, and with the active encouragement of David’s partner Sarah, we have decided to honour David’s wishes.

Big Big Train will therefore seek to continue as a band and will perform live and release new music in due course. More specific details of the band’s line-up and planned activities will follow in further announcements, including an opportunity for fans to celebrate David’s life and musical legacy.

Nick Shilton
Manager
Big Big Train

My personal feeling is that I welcome this statement. I have just received Welcome to the Planet and will spin it later. I am confident that the remaining members, Spawton especially, will choose carefully and wisely.

Longdon can never be replaced, but a band can move forward to a new era with the support of devoted fans.

They are a great band, and I'm glad to know they plan to continue. Sure it'll be different, but I'm hoping they'll choose a good new replacement (even though David Longdon is irreplaceable) and find their way into their musical future.

Glad they are continuing.

Good news that they are continuing.

With Longdon being obviously irreplaceable, the band does have some lead vocal talent in their current lineup with Rikard Sjöblom being the formal lead singer of Beardfish and Nick D'Virgilio being the lead vocalist for Spock's Beard for a couple of albums. If they are unable to find another singer, at the very least these two could share the duties.

Hi,

Out of curiosity ... do they really need vocals that bad? They are a great band as it is! Let them play for a while until they find themselves a bit?

That's up to them. Having said that, I would have no qualms against an instrumental album by them if they choose to go that route. I agree that they are a great band.

They'll soldier on. A great band with lots of talent.
Genesis survived Gabriel leaving, It Bites moved on without Dunnery, Marillion without Fish - if the core is strong and the hunger is still there, they'll find a way.
Welcome to the middle of the film.

Continuing without David (I personally think their five best albums are from the Longdon era) will be a tough task. I’ll still give them an opportunity though

Just a few years ago there were 7 members in the band. Now there are three. Well, if Genesis could do it.....

I'd like to hear D'Virgilio giving a try to the vocals (no replacement intended).

The Longdon era was without out doubt incredible--the move that brought them to the top of the heap. But, they were visionary, sophisticated, and very competent before Dave joined them (though founder Andy Poole is now retired). As evidenced by Greg Spawton's continued strong presence in all of their albums from the Longdon Era, they should be able to continue ... If the want. The still have Nick and Rikard.

I miss violist Rachel Hall and keyboardist Danny Manners, though. I really liked Grand Tour and Common Ground.

Good news indeed. I would echo the thoughts that they don't really need a new vocalist as Rikard and Nick would more that adequately cover these duties.
