Everything with Jeff Porcaro is golden, my most post-death sadness is the loss of Jeff in 1992.

My favourite drummer might still be Alex Riel. His playing is poetry.

Mani Neumeier has several very interesting drum solos on youtube. One of my faovrites (actually a duet) of him and a bulldozer I can't find there anymore.

I'm on a bit of a Reich tip at the moment; Music for 18 musicians, Different Trains & Electric Counterpoint being rotated at the moment.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Very often, drumming with too much showing off leaves me utterly cold. One thing is being able to move your drumsticks at an insane speed while having 2-3 bass drums, 7-8 toms, 2 snares and 10 cymbals, but it doesn't necessarily make interesting art.

If you have the ability to combine huge technical skills with a sense of musical poetry, it can indeed become interesting (f.e. Riel, Stuart Copland, Topper Headon), but in many cases, less is more. Some of my favourite drumming is actually extremely simple:

I have similar issues with many of the so-called "guitar gods" btw. Especially people like Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. To me they are often boring to listen to.
