I made the comment on the Top 15 Metal Albums post that I wasn’t sure I could make a list of my 15 favourite metal albums from this year, let alone of all time. I figured I would give it a go, and so far I’ve not got there. I have, however, narrowed my list down to 30, which is kind of like squinting at 15 and seeing double, right?

I am fairly certain about these 15, but I am well aware I’m leaving out some albums that I think might grow on me, and also that within this 15 are a few that I’ve only been introduced to in the last couple of days. I am aware that there will be some recency bias there. So, for the moment, I’m leaving it here at 30, but I fully intend to return to this list after a week or so, and attempt to knock it down to 15. (And in that time, I might reassess how deserving some of the more recent to my ears albums are to this list, and whether or not I’ve been unduly harsh on some of those that I’ve missed out.

Aborym - Hostile
Ad Nauseum - Imperative Imperceptible Impulse
The Advent Equation - Live at Psicofonia Studios
Æthĕrĭa Conscĭentĭa - Corrupted Pillars of Vanity
Årabrot - Norwegian Gothic

Chassm - Falling Forever
Confusion Field - Disconnection Complete

Creature - Eloge de l’Ombre
Dreadnought in the Pond - 0=1
Echoes and Signals - Mercurial
Existentia - The Planet in the Universe
Fioraidh - Mind Over Madness

Five The Hierophant - Through Aureate Void
Grorr - Ddulden’s Last Flight
HAH - Chimaera Monstrosa
Konom - Konom
The Lion's Daughter - Skin Show

Maladie - The Sick is Dead - Long Live the Sick
Massen - ContrAesthetic
Minutian - Magical Thinking
Mission Jupiter - Talk to Me
Molybaron - The Mutiny

Neptunian Maximalism - Solar Drone Ceremony
Sol Kia - Zos Ethos
Souls of Diotima - Janus

I recognised the name Papangu, and sure enough I have their Bandcamp as a saved tab on my browser, which means I haven’t yet listened to them. I’ll have to do something about that.

I like TNBD, and i can honestly say i wasn’t even aware they’d released anything this year. I feel ashamed. I will definitely have to listen to The World Inside.

Thanks!

I'd already been quite "far away" from the metal world, but returned back in 2010 as I became a reviewer on a Turkish webzine. After that "quest" was over in 2016, I again stood quite aloof. Always checked out singles and stuff, but barely interested in nearly all of them. Still checked my favourite bands' new outputs, but even that became obsolete to a great degree. I haven't listened to Kamelot's, Dimmu Borgir's, Nightwish's last albums. (I guess I did the first 2's, and fell asleep halfway.)

Anyway, there still are a bunch of metal albums that I like each year. I liked Cradle of Filth's last album a lot. Worse than their previous, but more listenable for me. I'll check out some of the stuff here mentioned. I also check out the "top" lists around the end of the year. Hope I'll come up with some stuff that interest me.

Most of my list has come either from albums I’ve been given to review for TPA, or bands that have been forward for inclusion in PA. Metal is not one of favourite genres, but there is no genre that I won’t listen to, and find something to enjoy.

I do have! Djent. Sick

It is a sub-genre, though. Even sub-sub-genre. LOL BUT IT INFESTED THE PROG METAL!!!Angry

There was a djent album (EP, as I remember) that I liked a lot. Its name escaped me. Para something something. With a cover art including a dark space image. Para something Project. Oh, I've googled it: The Paralydium Project. It was cool.

^ Between my list and yours we share only five titles. But there are a further 10 in your list that could have made my list. I shall have to check out the remaining titles!

Between my list and Mike’s, there were several albums from I, Voidhanger Records featured. A great label, with some great artists and albums. Sad news was posted today on their FB page, so for anyone who didn’t see it:

“Hi everyone,

Gabriele Gramaglia of Cosmic Putrefaction and Vertebra Atlantis here.
Luciano, the leader of the label, asked me to give you all this communication that I do with heavy heart and the utmost concern.
Unfortunately Luciano is now hospitalized in sub-intensive care unit and he is not fine at all.
I was incredibly shocked when I received this news from him and my hands right now are trembling.
That is the major reason for delays in communication with him that may have occur to anyone, me included, the past few weeks, and that is the worst I could ever have thought of.
Right now all we can do is to gather around him with our hearts and just hope and wish him nothing but the best.
I'll try to be in touch with him as much as possible and I will keep you posted as soon as possible about his conditions.

Thanks a lot for the attention,
Gabriele“

^killin it is perhaps an odd choice of words to use, while the head of the record label lies in intensive care. But yeah, the label is on 🔥 this year! 🥰❤️🖤
