Now that I'm back to doing business over a computer, I have to know... What's your Zoom protocol?
Do you stage the background, do you use a filter, do you look for the most appealing location in your house, do you lock your pets out of the room, do you wear pants ??? So many questions.

For small meetings in which I have to occasionally speak I go to the downstairs couch (my house is a split level) to minimize dog barks. I have never staged a background or used filters. I don't really care what other people see. I always wear pants anyway.* Otherwise, all other things I attend have hundreds of attendees and my video is off due to bandwidth considerations. I always keep the audio off in case I have to fart. Because my body rarely does multitasking, I generally don't fart when I speak.**

*The one exception was a multi-institution meeting I had to attend in which I could no longer hold in my bodily transfer of solids and took the laptop into the bathroom with me. Both audio and video were off and I triple-checked that before I let loose.

**I suspect this is more information than anyone needs. But hey, we all do these things, don't we?

Nope, I'm a decent person... Ermm

Have used Zoom for meetings organized by others, if not, and especially for my teaching, I used an in-house (university) video-conferencing based on Jitsi meet (which I prefer over Zoom).
The main things I payed attention to were lighting and background: enough front/side lights to be visible and not too specific (i.e. personal) things in the background. When the weather outside was good enough I would be in the garden (with a very greenish background)... Didn't need filters because of that and... well, my cat made a guest star appearance every once in a while, but was never willing to take over class...

Yes...Yes it is. Sick
But thanks for the honesty.
I moved my laptop from my office in the basement up to the kitchen for my first meeting with the partners in the firm I'm going to be working for. I though at least a first impression might be important to someone. My office (and I've posted pictures here before) is a bit of a dumping ground and houses my music collection. Giving them a clean, bright look at our beautiful, high ceiling, semi open concept home was a strategic thing on my part to provide a sense of professionalism. Now that I've met them all I may take a more relaxed tone and just clean up the crap behind me in  my office.

I can understand that, being first impressions and all that. I've been working at the same place for 27 years now. I can show up in a Zoom meeting upside down and people sort of expect that from me.

I was interested in seeing the comments from the different groups. Like you say, coworkers who've known you for years or clients / customers or other professionals that are outside your organization. I would certainly have been more comfortable in a Tee sitting in my home office if it had been just coworkers. I might not have even taken down the nude study of my wife sitting on the shelf behind me.

So follow up question, how much do you take notice of when doin' the Zoom?

I teach music lessons one on one so the camera is usually fixed in one place for myself and the student.

For piano my camera is on the keyboard and can be swiveled up to show the sheet music too. The student's camera is on their hands.
For guitar both cameras are on each other's left hands.

In piano lessons I'm liable to be in pajamas and barefoot, for guitar I try to wear something nice, similar to what I would wear to a class.

Best thing about piano lessons is that I can eat and drink during class. Sometimes near the end of the day I might even have a drink with alcohol.

You have to edit the sound features on Zoom for music lessons, turning off filters and automatic volume adjusts etc.

I try not to wear pants in general.
Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive

I've stopped using the video for most of my meetings now, mainly since a colleague accidentally turned his on while walking round the room in his boxers.

I have a slightly old work phone and I can't do backgrounds.
