I searched and found an old thread but it's closed; anyone play, collect, enjoy Magic The Gathering?
Any set! Any block! Any generation! I'm all about that vintage/classic casual kitchen table MTG.

I used to play, almost thirty years ago. Does that count? I had three main decks I used:
A red that was purely offensive, and based on doing maximum damage as fast as possible. If I didn’t do enough, fast enough, it quickly became a losing deck - but it could be devastating otherwise. A green that was designed to be long-lasting and win through attrition. It’s major handicap was that it couldn’t sustain attack from a deck such as my red one, but the longer it lasted, the harder it became to beat. Many of the cards continuously created counters, so that I ended up overwhelming any opponent. A blue that I rarely used, because it wasn’t as much fun as the red or the green, but which was fairly balanced in terms of offence and defence. I generally only used it against people who I had battled often and who knew about my red and green decks. Because they would tend, with good reason, to assume I would use the green or red deck, they’d come to play with a deck based against one of the other, and my blue deck would usually win against these. There was a lot of luck involved with these three decks, but that kind of made it fun for me. And it was delicious to see someone expecting me to play red or green, ending up suffering by my blue deck. I had a couple of other decks I played with, too, but definitely the red, green and blue were my favourites. |

Yes, that counts!
As I said I enjoy casual play with minimal limits, but I most certainly honor restricted rules - so I'm not going to pack a deck full of Black Lotus proxies on you. My "collection" goal at the moment is to assemble as many of the original Unlimited Edition white border cards as I can, eventually compiling a complete collection that will probably be just about 30 years old (1993!) itself lol. I don't play online, but when I get my new computer rig this summer I plan on hopping on that. I'm not as much into the newer sets, as WoTC really does appear to be unloading huge blocks of stuff like, every 6-9 weeks now. People can barely keep up, and they're getting vocal about it on Reddit and other boards LOL. I just enjoy playing casually; slam a game in real quick on a break, go 2/3 w a friend, etc. Keep it fun!

it never occurred to me that you could play it online, but I guess that makes sense. To me, the attraction was always that it was a card game, that I could play with friends. I only ever played casually, too - which used to annoy a couple of my friends who played it competitively, as they didn’t like that I would often beat them, when they considered themselves more experienced, and had been playing longer than me. But, like any card game, as much as skill comes into play, there is always an element of luck. Because I only ever played casually, ante never came into it. I wouldn’t have played otherwise, I admit.
I was playing in 1993/94, I think. I guess you could tell how long the group of friends I played with had been playing, by their expansion sets. Only one friend had Arabian Nights cards. I started playing after the previous expansion set (The Dark?) was no longer available, but when the first expansion set I played with (Fallen Empires) had not yet been released. I can’t remember when I stopped playing, but I think it was just after the first Ice Age expansion set, when I realised that in order to keep playing it would mean keeping on spending money, to keep up with the newer cards. Those of my friends who played competitively, were happy to keep on buying new cards, but I was not. I let one of my friends buy all my cards for a bargain price (which really pissed off some of his Magic friends, as he got some good cards), and never looked back. This is the first time I’ve even thought of Magic since…. 😄 |
