For those who aren’t aware, today (April 26) is the 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. To commemorate this, I’ve been listening to music in my collection from Ukraine. 🇺🇦

I figured I may as well make a poll out of it, even though I’m expecting the “none of the above” option to receive most (if not all) of the votes, and very few (if any) comments. 🤪

(I’ve left out any Kalugin projects, as I expect being probably the most well known, they would get all the votes.)

For those that you’re unfamiliar with, should you wish to familiarise yourself:

Some Ukrainian bands and artists, and their Bandcamp pages you might want to visit this Friday.

Azathoth Circle

Cthulhu Rise

Doomed City

Dreadnought in the Pond

Ethereal Riffian

Victor Go

La Horsa Bianca

Ignea

Korzo

Krobak

Nice Wings, Icarus!

Obiymy Doschu

Octopus Kraft

Sealand Airlines

Shiva the Destructor

Sleep In Heads

Slow Ride Home

Somali Yacht Club

Soom

Stoned Jesus

Straytones

Way Station

White Ward

5R6

💙💛🇺🇦💙💛

No Nokturnal Mortem, Kroda, Drudkh, Ygg, Stoned Jesus or 1914?

Guess you don't like extreme metal :/

I visited Ukraine several years back and even visited the Chernobyl museum in Kiev.

It was a major tragedy and my heart still goes out to our brothers and sisters who are affected by the ramifications of that fateful day.

^ I guess you meant to write Nokturnal Mortum. Not my style, but a splendid band.

Did you listen to Limbonic Art - In Abhorrence Dementia? Probably my favourite melodic/symphonic black metal album.

I will give my vote to Krobak, as them and 5R6 are the only two I know from the list.

And just because it is a song that is on point:

I'm surprised KORZO isn't on PA

Sounds like post-metal to me

This was more a reflection of what I was listening to yesterday. The post metal feel seemed more appropriate for the occasion. 🤷🏻‍♂️

My favourite band from the Ukraine is probably White Ward, though they are possibly still not “extreme” enough?

Also, Azathoth Circle, but again perhaps not as “extreme”. 🤔

I will endeavour to explore the bands you suggested, none of which I’ve even heard of.

I don’t know if this is actually from Pripyat, but it’s certainly appropriate to mention. I’ve not listened to it yet, so have no idea what it sounds like.

I imagine very few of these tags relate to the location of the band, so much as the content of their music, but if I find time, I might trawl through them, and see if I can find some bands that are local to Chernobyl.

Yesterday I've listened to the two Obiymy Doschu albums for all the afternoon.
Great voice, powerful songs and excellent strings arrangements, in particular on Son

Don't know any of these bands listed, but thanks for including the bandcamp links - will explore some of these... Anything you'd recommend to start with (knowing that I don't like extreme/death and other kind of metals, with some exceptions)?

Of the Ukrainian prog scene, I only know Karfagen and Kalugin. I have been appalled by both and will quite likely try to avoid them.

I'm with you on this one. I'm totally turned off by ridiculously complex symphonic prog that features weak vocalists.

I just reviewed that a few days ago. My problem with SON is that from a compositional point of view, the tracks are all out of the same mold. True that i'm not fond of that vocalist either but he is competent. I just find the album OK. So much effort went into it but when all is said and done i just don't find myself wanting to return to it. Many of these Porcupine Tree inspired bands just make me want to go back and listen to Porcupine Tree!
