Quite unexpected for me was to read about EJ being involved in the Gentle Giant's first steps from Simon Dupree to prog mavericks and was even briefly considered as GG member. I've seen somebody mentioned him trying to become King Crimson member in the early stages of the band too

Funeral for a Friend is probably Elton's proggiest song, on his Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album.

Try Madmann Acros the River and Captain Fantasyic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.
And side one of the double album Blue Moves is very progy, most of Blue Moves is progy. Hes 8 first albums are all very eclectoc which is quite common among early 70s singer-songwriters. For Eltons case its a mix of roots, classical inspired neo-classical harpsicord ballads, folk rock, piano rock, honky tonk. Tumbleweed Connection is the best epic americana inspired album and its made by a brit. It contains some really good songs and its Eltons most genuibly perfect albums through and through. |

Tumbleweed and Madman should be in everyone's record collection if they are serious about good (pop) rock music. The later lp's Honky, Don't Shoot Me and Goodbye all have some nice good music. Many people like several of his later ones also b ut they never grabbed my fancy like the earlier ones.

You've convinced me of Elton John's proggy credentials enough to add him to my latest prog channel (in place of Janus).

Try the debute Empty Sky also, very raw, ambissous and eclectic, with some Simon Dupree esque elements

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (song) is one of the best pop songs ever written and sung.

GYBR was his creative peak for sure, but other early Elton albums worth exploring in my opinion would be: Elton John (S/T 1970) Madman Across the Water (1971) Honky Chateau (1972 Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player (1973)

I totally agree. Empty Sky is Elton John at his best in his psychedelic heyday. ![]() |

Mmmhhh!!!... Tumbmeweed has a country connection I don't appreciate, and it doesn't have that slightly progressive slant present in Madman and Goodbye. And TBH, if you take away Funeral (FFaF), there isn't much proggyness in Goodbye. As for those post-Goodbye albums, I don't detect anything proggy either. Good pop , but nothing prog. I don't think I ever really heard the albums Blue Moves or Single Man, though. I had grown tired of lton back then. .

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |
