Excluding original material.

When I say "local" it doesn't have to mean your city alone, but if you go around the world, what do the locals play?

I've been all around North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, and I'd say 99% of what I hear is music from the 60/70s. Not always the best, but they're usually songs you'd hear on the radio.

One band I never hear are The Doors, and I wonder if its because they don't feel like they (lead singer especially) can duplicate it. I hear Pink Floyd often, "Money" and "Comfortably Numb" (but never "Another Brick In The Wall: Part 2).. "Takin' Care of Business" is another one (even my band played it). I don't hear much Beatles or Stones, maybe a song or two. I don't remember hearing Led Zeppelin, and I think its because the vocals can be tough. I'm sure singers wouldn't wanna burn out their voice before their set is over.

I notice a lot of 4/4 straight-rock beats, maybe a shuffle, and occasionally a blues/waltz, and a ton of 2 or 3-chord songs...

I suspect some cities overseas try to cater to English speaking tourists. I do remember "The Thrill Is Gone" in Thailand, but the band played mostly original reggae.... Many times I/we would be walking, and after hearing music, we'd go in and check them out, or at least try to make out what is being played from the outside. I notice the karaoke very similar to what cover bands play.

Anyway, I'd love to hear your stories, or your theories.. Cheers!

Do you remember which Eagles songs? I never hear "Hotel California", but I've heard "Life In The Fast Lane" or "Take It Easy".. Never heard "One Of These Nights" or any of my favorite Eagles.

Yup, all of them. My best friend fronted a pub band for years and did them all.

Of course in bed, I think of another huge factor I missed... Songs that make you wanna drink alcohol!

I did remember hear The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" in Austin, Texas... I know I heard Billy Joel's "Piano Man", which has a feel of rows of people moving their huge mugs of beer to the rhythm, rocking it back and forth.

Live music in bars has taken a huge hit here in Central Freezieland. Most bars can no longer afford to hire a band and only allow a band to play for what they can get at the door via a cover charge. My experience is mostly rooted in the mid late 70's into the 80's. For about 90% of the bands you had to be a live jukebox, playing the hits. Throw in the odd original tune if you had any, but most patrons want 'familiar music'.

When Busker was doing bar gigs, their repertoire was about 75% hits and 25% original material.

Songs would include anything from Santana - Evil Ways, a Beatles or Beach Boys Medly, Kansas - Point Of No Return, ELP - Lucky Man, but also Boz Scaggs - Lido Shuffle, Dan Hill - Sometimes When We Touch. Having played so long together, Busker had a huge song list that they could draw from and if asked they could transition into C&W (Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues) or straight up pop music, Genesis - Misunderstanding, ELO - Roll Over Beethoven. Give the paying public what they want and you'll get re-booked. Simple economics.

Oh, and for the Doors, Light My Fire was the go to song.

Wow...I can't  even recall the last time I was in a bar where a band played...a few years back I often went to a nearby town and listened  to this blues rock band my friend knew of and they played Stones, Zep, Muddy Waters, and many blues standards.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

When I was in college, I lived in the college town next to UC Santa Barbara, called Isla Vista. This place has a reputation as party central. Though nowadays, it's a lot of students from the nearby city college who just want to live there to party, fulfilling the prophecy.

ANYWAY, naturally, there were a lot of backyard concerts, including in my own. But while we were putting on a show we called Hot Loads of Jazz (which became pretty popular actually), other houses were doing mostly Indie stuff. And maybe Indie Funk... I guess. It was a lot of stuff that didn't have a lot of depth for me. But you can't expect a bunch of people who probably don't plan on becoming professional musicians to be the greatest thing ever. It usually was just a bunch of doods who suddenly realized "jazz" is a thing, and then proceeded to just jam over one chord using one scale and thought they were jazzing.

That being said, it did feel nice doing something different. And I think that actually is one reason why these college town stoners were into Hot Loads of Jazz. We were playing stuff that was blowing their minds, and not limited to Jazz. We had my music partner's music from his album (awesome prog, check it out, he's on PA, Jarod Fedele), we had psych, we had a singer-songwriter with guitar, and even some of that funky Indie stuff (with a band that I thought was kind of doing it better than all those other ones around the neighborhood). And this was in addition to jazz ranging from weird arrangements of standards to RTF to Snarky Puppy and nu-jazz stuff. And jazz prog metal!

So thank you, superficial Indie doods who were trying to get laid. You made us feel special.

In the way every band in the 60's HAD to play Blues (or "Blowse" for UK pronunciation) to get a venue slot, bands these days have to play covers.
You still have the open mics but due to size it's either acoustic guitars or technological backing tracks to a delayed electric guitar.
I think "Individual style through grass roots" has been boxed off. Employed to entertain customers so they buy more beer.
What better way to do that is through playing ye olde 60's/70's stuff?
Oh and Seven Nation Army.
