I have no reservations about voting for Fawlty Towers.

I did a similar poll years ago. Fawlty Towers, Rising Damp, Porridge for me. Had Yes Minister / Yes Prime Minister made your list, I'd vote for that (I think it's brilliant). And other classic favourites of mine are The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin and Allo Allo.

And as manic as John Cleese was. He wasn't a patch on Leonard Rossiter in Rising Damp.
Although The Fall and Rise of Reggie Perrin was better and should have made this poll. I didn't get where I am today by excluding Reggie Perrin from Comedy polls. |

I'd love to have included Yes Minister and Reggie Perrin in the poll too, but I'd already used up all 25 available slots. I also had to leave out Father, Dear Father and many others. Maybe it calls for a Classic 1970's Britcoms poll - Part Two. I'll save Allo Allo for a Classic 1980's Britcoms poll, which will of course include Only Fools and Horses.

I'm not complaining or saying they should be there (I loathe it when people do that in polls I make or say things like "Where is such and such?"). I'm happy to see others mentioned though as long as someone can something positive about any of my choices. I think I was mistaken, I did a modern British one, but I was thinking of this classic poll: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=106738 I still seem to remember making one from that period. As for my vote, Fawlty Towers is so great, but I will give Rising Damp another vote. Edited by Logan - February 14 2021 at 07:30 |

I would've voted in your poll too - for either Porridge or Rising Damp - but it's now locked.

I know none of these. I've only watched one episode of Blackadder (first season).

Fawlty Towers, but only because Reginald Perrin is missing. Nothing compares to Yes, [Prime] Minister, but that's from the '80's, I believe.

Fawlty Towers, but I have a soft spot for Are You Being Served?

Just to be clear, I didn't make that poll, but I have unlocked it if you wish to vote. Topics lock automatically after a period of inactivity (or at least they did). That's something that was implemented by the site owner and I don't mess around with those forum settings (except I have unlocked lots of old topics when requested). |

Difficult one, but it is difficult not to vote for Dad’s Army, which just pips Fawlty.
By the way, there are a couple here which you will not be able to watch either now, or any time soon, owing to the innate sensibilities of the bleeding heart brigade. It Ain’t Half Hot, Mum, was another classic from the pens of Perry and Croft, the chaps who created Mainwaring and co. Based in the Raj, it is, of course, “racist”. In fact, the Indian characters always came out better than the British, and it was my favourite comedy as a child. Love Thy Neighbour is another, and with its very liberal (pun intended) smattering of words such as sambo, has not an earthly of ever being seen again in modern times. My objection to this show was not so much its language and attitudes (the main black character always came off better than the ignorant “honky”), but the fact that it was altogether dreadfully unfunny. Lastly, a quick word about Alf Garnett. What the liberal set don’t seem to realise, or are too wilfully ignorant to accept, is that this show was a deliberate parody of people such as Garnett. The quite brilliant lead, Warren Mitchell, was a Jew, and committed his entire life to equality of thought and religion.

My abiding memory of Citizen Smith was at an election, where Wolfe demanded a recount several times, on account of the fact that he only received 5 votes, there being, of course, 6 signed up members of The Tooting Popular Front.

Nor do I, and I have seen a lot of British fare on the American PBS. That said, I am a British citizen at least, but I'm no expat Some might consider investing in Britbox. https://www.britbox.com/ Edited by Logan - February 14 2021 at 09:46 |

![]() ![]() The David Croft and Jimmy Perry Comedies are all classic slices of gentle British satire, all based on their personal experiences of British life, the class system and the ridiculousness of snobbery both domestic and abroad. Dads Army has to be the best of their output. Fatty Owls has my vote because its excellent and as its getting such a pasting of late in the media
