From all the ones I've checked out, they've all been really good and would love to find more. I know a few below are on YouTube, too.

-Fat City
-Minnie And Moskowitz
-The Visitors
-The Blue Motel
-Wanda

and "Les Chat" (The Cat) from France, featuring Jean Gabin and Simona Signoret

Some are very low-budget (maybe all), but it features some fine acting, script, and the general story… Some don't have much movement, some take place in one setting. By the mid-70s, it got stylized with "Taxi Driver" and seemed to have died down since in favor of blockbusters, instead of the more personal movie.

Does anyone have any favorites or recommendations?

"Payday" is on YouTube in full, as is one of my favorite movies, "MIkey and Nicky".... "Stroszek" is a fine movie, too.

Thanks for the blog link - I'll check it out later today.

I agree the 70s was the best decade for movies (music, too)..

-70s
-60s
-50s
-40s
-30s

is how I'd rate my favorite decades. I was born in the 80s, and despite the many movies I've seen, I can't say I'm a fan. My favorites are actually non-English types.

the 70s had some great German movies. I will only mention "Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum" ("The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum")

I've had this on my watch-list for a while. I'll expedite this and try to watch as early as possible.

I know it's 1966, but did you see/like "Abschied von gester"?

"Abschied von gestern" is one of the movies I have not seen yet. I like another movie by Alexander Kluge, "Die Artisten unter der Zirkuskuppel: Ratlos" ("Artists under the Big Top: Perplexed") from 1968, a lot.

I remembered this was a Fassbinder film, but actually it's directed by Volker Schlöndorff and Margarethe Von Trotta.

Speaking of Volker Schlöndorff, I guess you've seen Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum)?

That's about the 70's but it's not from the 70's.

The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are:

Taxi Driver

The Godfather

Jaws (ok the shark maybe isn't very realistic but people are savagely attacked by sharks every year so for me it counts)

American Graffiti

certainly. it won an Oscar for "best movie in foreign language". Friede and I have actually tried the thing with the effervescent powder in the navel

Wow. Really? I always assumed you were in your late 50's at least especially since most people your age have no idea who Mort Sahl is. Your tastes seem very sophisticated for someone born in the 80's. I was born just after the dawn of prog(1970) and most folks my age seem clueless about most of the stuff discussed on here as well. Then again I'm clueless about most modern pop music(and to some degree all the latest tv shows and movies) so I suppose it all evens out.

"Une belle fille come moi" from 1972 by François Truffaut comes to my mind. one of my favorite movies. the movie is the reason why I have to think of sex whenever I hear the sound of a racing car.

here a trailer for the movie:

The French Connection II

Popeye Doyle's addiction of heroine is so vividly portrayed by Gene Hackman, and the back streets of Marseille are utilised well.

Serpico

A true tale of a cop standing up to corruption in the NYPD. Also shows New York tenement living at its not very finest.

Family Life

A brilliant and disturbing study of as young lady's tragic descent into paranoid schizophrenia after being forced to have an abortion by her parents.  Powerful film that helped change the law on compulsory electric shock therapy in the UK.
