MOSTLY AUTUMN: THE LAST BRIGHT LIGHT in the renaissance era of modern British prog, who shine as brightly as a beautiful WHITE RAINBOW. It's still mostly summer here in England, but this seemed like the perfect time for a Mostly Autumn appreciation thread, in THE SPIRIT OF AUTUMN PAST before THE LAST BRIGHT LIGHT of summer fades away. FOR ALL WE SHARED together on ProgArchives, I think this may be the first thread in SIGHT OF DAY devoted entirely to Mostly Autumn, so here's THE STORY SO FAR..... The band were formed in York, North Yorkshire in 1995 by band leader Bryan Josh on vocals and guitar, Iain Jennings on keyboards, and with Heather Findlay joining the band on vocals for the recording of their first album in 1997. There are currently seven members of Mostly Autumn, but there are no PASSENGERS in this band, with each individual member contributing to instilling their diverse music with a rich and full sound. Their beautiful albums of Progressive Rock are as sparklingly effervescent as a bright WHITE RAINBOW, and are best-described as being like music DRESSED IN VOICES in a HEART FULL OF SKY. Mostly Autumn's diverse songs can be as delicate as GLASS SHADOWS reflected like STORMS OVER STILL WATER, or as unrelentingly powerful as a runaway train. This versatile band of merry minstrels can just as easily perform MUSIC INSPIRED BY THE LORD OF THE RINGS as classic songs from PINK FLOYD REVISITED, or even music bathed in scintillating strings with THE GHOST MOON ORCHESTRA. Mostly Autumn are STILL BEAUTIFUL LIVE and who can forget THAT NIGHT IN LEAMINGTON Spa back in 2010 when Heather Findlay gave her last live performance before Olivia Sparnenn joined the band on vocals. The band are still going strong today with their latest album released as recently as 2019, so who knows what THE NEXT CHAPTER may bring in the continuing story of Mostly Autumn.

I first saw them back in 2009, and bought the compilation Catch The Spirit at the merch desk. That was my introduction to them. I saw them with Heather again at the Stables, Milton Keynes, and then at the Leamington gig. Seen them a couple of times since with Olivia. A great band, though I've yet to hear a studio album of theirs that appeals to me all the way through. Even Passengers doesn't get going until a few tracks in. I love the live albums though, Live 2009 and That Night In Leamington both have a wonderful setlist.

Two of my particular live favourites from Mostly Autumn are That Night in Leamington (and what a night it was!) and Pink Floyd Revisited. ![]() Comfortably Numb Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 24 2020 at 13:17 |

Superb band, and my reviews say it all about my feelings. I still consider Dressed In Voices as one of the finest albums in my collection, and the last one, White Rainbow, is achingly beautiful in parts.

Yes, Mostly Autumn sound just as good as some of the classic Progressive Rock bands from the golden era of prog in the 1970's. This is what it says about Mostly Autumn on Wikipedia..... "They produce music heavily influenced by 1970s progressive rock. According to the BBC, Mostly Autumn "fuse the music of Genesis and Pink Floyd with Celtic themes, hard rock, and strong, emotional melodies". They have also been compared with other progressive bands from the same era such as Renaissance, Jethro Tull and Camel, blended with traditional folk music." I agree with all of the above and I'm sure you won't be disappointed with your two recent Mostly Autumn albums when you play them.

I haven't yet listened to any of Mostly Autumn's studio albums in full, but I will do now I've started this thread. I've mostly been listening to Mostly Autumn's 3-CD Pass the Clock compilation throughout all four seasons up until now.

I loved "For all we shared" and "The Last Bright Light", and liked "Spirit of Autumn Past" and "Passengers", but somehow fell off the wagon after that. I never felt like they successfully integrated the prog and celtic sides with any consistency, though "Hollow" is one exception. I guess I should see what they have been up to the last 15 years?

As an appetiser, this is "Porcupine Rain" from Mostly Autumn's first album, For All We Shared
"The Last Climb", also from the first album And "Heroes Never Die". from the same album, in widescreen, so too bad if you're watching this on a mobile phone. ![]() "Out of the Inn" - one of Mostly Autumn's folkier refrains, although it still packs a powerful progressive punch. ![]() The Night Sky - an epic nine-and-a-half-minute-long song to close their debut album in dramatic style. Are they good? Do bears s**t in the woods?? The only album they've done that I don't like is Dressed in Voices. Every other album is 4* at least, and many are 5* (TLBL, SOAP, Sight of Day, White Rainbow). And The Night Sky is utterly unbelievable, especially with the imagery on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFTmQSI8qb4 Watch and wonder. I'd never had a 9 minute eargasm before, but I do every time I watch this..
