I wonder would it be possible to include PRONK as a new sub-genre, this is a well known and established genre, and having included it in sub-genres we could break out Pronk bands from the other sub-genres, especially Cardiacs and similar from RIO/Avant.
At the same time, I realise that there is a case for suggesting the inclusion of one of two more Pronk bands on PA, but that is another subject for another thread. Meanwhile, give Pronk its own rightful home in sub-genres. ![]() https://www.last.fm/tag/pronk/artists ![]() Edited by LAM-SGC - February 29 2020 at 21:11 |

^ guarantee it'll never happen. I think there should be a tag called brutal prog and some of those bands could fit in that for sure. Brutal prog is more accepted across the digital divide. Probably not enough pronk bands to consider although i think it's a legit term :) In fact i'd be for Cardiacs having its own sub all to itself :)

I think there should be a sub-genre just for the greatest unclassifiable bands and that sub-genre should be called
Zappa-Cardiacs ;) Actually, you'd be surprised at how many bands there are, when you add together all those that are called Pronk in various places, all those that self-identify as Pronk, all those that used to be Pronk and are now something else, and those that are Pronk in essence but don't use the term and perhaps never get called Pronk e.g. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. I could list a load of Pronk bands, but there is no need, as those who know ... know. But my favs are Cardiacs, SGM, Poisoned Electrick Head, Fugazi, Spratleys Japs, Levitation, Doctor Nerve, Map, (I think alongside Cardiacs, Map was probably the template for Pronk), Sleepy People. I would also say that System of a Down are Pronk. And there was an American band whose name I can't remember, other than it was a two word name and it began with S. Probably Minutemen, Nomeansno & Meat Puppets could belong into that sub-genre.

Not enough bands to create this sub-genre and they're currently already well served by Avant. SGM, Doctor Nerve, Upsilon Acrux (from the lastfm list) aren't punky enough for me, SGM are more Avant Metal than punk, Doctor Nerve have more jazz going on than punk & Upsilon Acrux are rehearsal intensive math rock.
Let's just recognize that term and use it for all bands that sound like, or are related to, Cardiacs, no need for a new sub-genre.

Is the MAP band you're referring to Mort Aux Pourris from Quebec? Having a listen now and enjoying them.

I saw them in the Frog Pond pub in Connecticut in the 2000's, the pub was less than half a mile from my house and there couldn't have been more than 20 people there. They were great.

On reflection, I think you are right. For example, while Doctor Nerve on a quick listen sounds a bit like the pronk band Pinhead Nation, with its herky jerky bits, a longer listen reveals that it isn't punk madness, but early Zappa style fusion rather than punk. As for Map, a great London band in the early 90s, championed by The Organ. They were the epitomy of pronk, they could be in the middle of a fast shouty Cardiacs style song and then suddenly stop all those big bangs and chords and play a keyboard waltz and then speed up the waltz while the band shouted lines in German. I only know of the one 6 track cassette I bought at a gig. I don't think they ever made a CD. Edited by LAM-SGC - March 02 2020 at 02:46 |

I know, it upsets me too. About ten years ago I asked Marina and/or Sean at The Organ, whatever happened to Map, and they said, they just split up sometime in the 90s. But I honestly can't remember what they said about an album, if there was one or not. I've also searched you tube, with their very unique song titles, again nothing. Now, since I posted this, I was going through my pronky vinyl last night and found a 4 track 10" EP, with only one song the same as on the EP cassette. But because they used such a very common word as a name it is impossible to find out anything about them on the net, also because there are a few other bands called Map as well. http://www.organart.demon.co.uk/ |
