This thread is for information and educational purposes. I'd love to get a feel for people who have an actual background or experience with writing, producing, recording, and performing music! Are any of you guys in a band, projects, etc.? Were you in the past? Tell us all about it!

I've been playing, writing, and recording bass and guitar for bands since 2005. The last international release I played on was Zealtory (tech death metal from Boston) debut "The Charnel Expanse" back in 2013. Tons of bass session work and preparing a double album of my own music Wink.

I'll have a link to all my stuff when I get back in later today!

What about you, PA?! SHARE YOUR MAGIC!

I play bass in a (non-prog) covers band. I also dabble a bit on the guitar and mandolin.

I can - almost - play the drums, although it's been a while. I was in numerous mediocre heavy metal and indie bands when I was young.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I have a Yamaha PSR-4600 keyboard and an acoustic and electric guitar. I like to have the Eagles' Hell Freezes Over DVD playing in the background acting as a "backing band" while I play along to it on electric guitar, although I would hardly call myself a "musician". That would be stretching the definition of musician a little too far. Tongue

Not by trade but by hobby (see my avvy). My best work it on keyboards, synthesizers are a particular favorite, but I play more acoustic guitar because it's so easy to pick up and put down.  My first synthesizer was a Korg Poly 61. I got it used back in 1984 and it had a weird defect that only showed up on some of the patches.  If you hit a key six times on the sixth note it didn't sound right.  Hard to describe. But I made use of that.  I loved experimenting with the arpeggiator.  I actually made recordings to cassette of some of my improvisations early on which I copied to VHS and put to video.  Here's one of them -
The rest are available here -
My channel includes one flyover of an architectural project I was working on back in 2013. I am an architectural engineer and technologist by career, BTW. I got my first electric and steel string acoustic back in 1984 as well.  I have none of those now and the Poly 61 became non functional many years ago and I no longer have it.  My current gear are a classical acoustic guitar by Yamaha, model I don't know offhand.  A Kawai K1 synthesizer. A Jackson Performer electric with a Floyd Rose whammy bar. A Yamaha QY100 sequencer.  Amp model I don't know offhand.

I've been playing drums for 27 years, and have been playing guitar, piano, bass for 15 years. I've released 4 CD's on Amazon. I play all the instruments, using an 8-track Tascam (I don't use any computers), instrumental music of all genres.

I haven't played live for about 2 years for many reasons (bad audiences, not finding the right people, musical tastes).

I self taught myself guitar and piano in the 1970s, as did my three brothers. We began accumulating "gear" in the 1980s as keyboards got cheaper and sequencing, MIDI, and sampling technologies became easier. Our new friends had names like Polk, Nakamichi, Sony, and Carver; Casio, Alessis, Ensoniq, Prophet, and Korg; Amiga, Apple and MacIntosh; Garcia, G & L, Fender, and Guild; Ludwig, Paiste, Roland, and Djembe. We set up a full-time jamming and recording studio in my brother's great room in 1984 or 5. Recorded endless weekend jam sessions fueled by beer and pizza (and the occasional Thanksgiving turkey) and many, many guests--all of whom brought their particular talents and gear (e.g. ChapmanStick, "Fripp-in a-box," congas, and other portables). Had a blast for about six years when marriages and children "broke up the band" around 1991. One brother still keeps it up (the one with the studio and all the keyboards). For a while he was editing all those hours of analog and digital audio tapes and issuing CDs complete with photos, titles, and liner notes! It was awesome!
Alas! I do not play my guitars anymore; after purchasing my own ChapmanStick around 1987 and working damn hard to try to "master" it on even a rudimentary level I realized that I should not waste my time, that there are too many dedicated musicians with way more time and talent on their hands than I to carry the torch. Also, I realized that there were enough professionals and far more accomplished artists out there creating music enough to satisfy my needs. (Though I still love to listen to my/our own stuff from time to time.)

Self-taught composer and musician. I've been making music ever since I can remember - I always enjoyed making my own stuff instead of covers, and used to record when I was a kid in one of those colorful toy cassette players/recorders with a crappy microphone. Longest standing project is the one linked in my sig, which is a solo prog venture. When I was a teen I had grunge bands. Then I started getting into folk and had some folk duos. Then jazz and classical. I used to get together with friends to jam, but life gets in the way, so now strictly solo.

From personal observation, people who like prog a lot also play music themselves. The only exception I know of personally is my wife.

I'm a classically trained pianist and started when I was 7.  I have also played in a band back in the 70's called The Gazaans.  You won't find anything on us LOL.  I play all keyboards.  I also majored in Music Composition at USU, and have composed several things and have many in process, mostly song cycles that seem to be somewhat Impressionist.  Most of my work has been piano solos both original and heavily re-arranged, but I have also done organ works and have arranged for small orchestras and percussion ensembles, many of which have been performed at various places including auditoriums.  My dream was to compose soundtracks, but my first wife helped squash that dream unfortunately.

I play ( mostly rhythm, but can play a solo if absolutely necessary ) guitar and sing lead for an amateur band called Rare Goat, a power-pop type group which has a new music video out for a song I composed (“Rocket Launch Caroline”). I also satisfy my avant-garde urges via releases by the Blue Sign Factory.

I'm a singer. I gave a long break and we've been working on our first full-length album with my first serious band Celestial Asylum (a symphonic prog-power band). I recorded a demo album with the same band in 2003 and/or 2004 (released in 2004). I also recorded a full-length album with my second serious band Knightmare in 2005-ish (released years after).

I started to play guitar in a very small boy. Some years later my brother hasn´t got bassplayer, he said I could come into his band if I started to play bass. I started. We were on the bandcamp one summer and there I learned to play drums (played it in two bands). I have had really many small bands, in one band we made three e.p:s and one single (self-released, just noticed someone has put them into rate your music sites). In 2000`s i made recordings with tascam four-track recorder. At the moment I have acoustic blues trio.

I can say I am selflearned, that bandcamp has been the only education to me in music. Not understand theory of music almost at all.
