Hello R.I.O. Fans
Are there any actual R.I.O. fans out here I'm in desperate straights here stuck in the land of hip-hop-rap whatever & really bad country music aaaagh my worst nightmare come true
I joined thinking that I would find fans of the genre of R.I.O. and to my dismay I can't find one page that has a post in the last month ,if I am looking in the wrong place could someone let me know please. One can only read so many album reviews. I got my love of the 60's soul music from my sister when she would play her 45's on her portable record player,my love for jazz and blues from my Dad who would come home from work on friday night and play his big band & Fats Waller and Oscar Peterson albums and my absolute love of classical music from my Mother who would play DeBussy while cooking dinner.Everything changed when I heard 4 distinct musicians though Miles Davis his album Sorcerer just floored me still does to this day,Jimi Hendrix never heard such notes before or since and then in the 70's I heard 2 that totally changed every thing for me Frank Zappa have not been the same since then I bought this weird album with a sock on the cover spent my allowance on it Henry Cow that record opened so many doors for me pertaining to what I would listen to up until now still amazes me. To this day I am still very fond of jazz & blues music nothing else like it for my ears,I can't imagine not listening to some John Lee Hooker while BBQ'ing a big piece of meat on my smoker while nursing an ice cold brew in 90 degree heat or hearing some old motown or cajun while making a pot of gumbo and dancing in the kitchen with a lovely woman but when I need to listen to some tunes that I really enjoy I will put some Art Zoyd or Univers Zero ,Gatto Marte ( which I found out about from a now closed blog) and if I want to get in a rowdy mood maybe some Secret Chiefs 3 although some of the stuff is nothing more than noise other stuff is incredible, just found 2 new bands - groups that I started listening to tonight Thinking Plaque & Far Corner which I really like alot think I will need more time with this music.I still listen to the 4 musicians-bands that changed what I listen to and always will, but what I have found with the R.I.O. genre is that there is so much more under one umbrella the choices seem endless and I look forward to having some insightful discussions. |

Here´s one!! I think I am not the biggest here, but really love Mothers of Invention sixties albums, loved really much Samla Mamma´s Måltid, also liked some Henry Cow although started to interest more about Slapp Happy when hearing their great collaboration album "Desperate Straights". If punk is not a bad thing to you, really recommend "Thinking Fellers Union Local 282" to you! There are also really many weird bands put into postpunk or something, like the Red Krayola, Pere Ubu, the Birthday Party, the Pop Group etc.
You´re highly welcome!

This has become the default RIO thread of the forum: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=50898. (There is also a part one to that thread, but it's a long time closed and may have been deleted.) Every once and awhile there will be a thread on a new release in this field, but it will usually sink fairly quickly. But there is a small and dedicate group here that loves the RIO/Avant, so by all means start and participate in some discussion. :) Welcome to PA.

Hello and welcome! I am part of the small contingent of RIO/Avant fans mentioned in the above post. I am also technically still part of the genre team, though I haven't been active for a while. Another forum member, who is not RIO's biggest fan (understatement of the century ), gave us the nickname of "panheads" - which we are very proud of . Anyway, I am sure the other panheads will soon be here to welcome you.

I'm a big RIO fan; we certainly do exist here.
But seriously, I love lots of Rock in Opposition music (Art Zoyd is my particular favourite overall). R.I.O, and R.I.O. related acts used to get more attention at Prog Archives, so much so that it's been claimed that it drove some of the more traditional Proggers away from the site. |

A Thanks for the tips.I have the Samla Mammas Manna album Maltid this is a favorite recording of mine and it encompasses all that I like about this catagory-genre of RIO just wish I understood Swedish. Also am a fan of the keyboard player Lars Hollmer who surprises me on every song dam I miss his playing.
The Slap Happy album you speak of I have heard that but it has been years maybe a few decades,so it would be unfair of me to comment I should think it's time to check it out again.

Has a nice ring to it For the thread’s sake, some of my favorite RIO releases: Fred Frith - Speechless Henry Cow - Western Culture Carla Bley - Tropic Appetites (known as a jazz musician, but this album is very much in the RIO style) And of course Samla’s Maltid. Sorry it has taken me way too long to reply life got in the way. I am well familiar with 3 of the recordings you mentioned, and also know of FF from Henry Cow and John Zorn ,however I have not heard the album so I will seek it out on your recommendation. The album by Sammy's Mamma is a monster and completely forgot about this group I do have it on vinyl and probably been years since I heard it.It makes me remember why I love this genre of music so .This past week my grand daughter gave me a copy of a band called Naked Truth Ouroboros, I checked it out on this site and it is listed as a RIO band, not so sure about that sounds a bit like David Torn-Jon Hassel with a pinch of Miles Davis in the mix,but I can say is this sounds incredible on headphones sitting next to a wood stove in the middle of the night no other sounds except the dogs snoring and the fire crackling.I will have to have a talk with her about music next time they come and visit us.

I'm with Logan. I'm more of a fan of Duran Duran's "Rio" than R.I.O.

I don't see myself connected to any genre but i do prefer the strange to the straight.
So have found a lot of nice music in avant-grade rock forms (R.I.O: Zheul: Post/Math Rock) .

I love Duran Duran's RIO and R.I.O. (Rock in Opposition). I would have liked to hear Univers Zero do a chamber rock cover of Duran Duran's RIO. I love all of the core R.I.O. bands and a lot of later RIO festivals and related "avant prog" bands. "Chamber rock" is a favourite of mine. They brought out the feminist subtext rather too overtly, I thought. Edited by Mascodagama - March 30 2020 at 17:34 |

Logan, sorry for the off-topic but is the second season of Utopia any good? I really loved the first season SPOILER ALERT! until the ending. I think it was nonsense, so I didn't have the urge to watch the second season. SPOILER ALERT! Edited by Shadowyzard - March 30 2020 at 17:46 |
