I am in my twenties, female, and my whole life I have listened to rock, with a particular love for 90's alternative & grunge, and the beloved progressive rock.
But young females interested in prog seem hard to find? I've never had a friend to share my love of prog.. My parents go very hard in the scene, I've attended countless shows since birth, even the very last Nearfest etc. It flows through my blood at this point. Unfortunately, almost no one else young around me seems to have any interest or they don't understand it. Prog Favorites include: King Crimson Anathema Phideax Renaissance Porcupine Tree or most of Steven Wilsons work Peter Gabriel Consider the Source Shoutout to Mattias for Anglagard and Necromonkey Plenty more beyond |

Welcome to the forum ! (I would put you in contact with my youngest but he recently turned 180 and now only listens to hip hop and such - he used to listen to Anathema, Transatlantic, Yes, ...)

Welcome to the forums! I'm 19 and non-binary and also love both alternative rock and prog rock.
I listen to most of the artists on your list but the ones that I absolutely love are King Crimson and Porcupine Tree. Anathema's We're Here Because We're Here and Renaissance's Scheherazade are also favorites of mine, as is some of Peter Gabriel's work.

^ I was gonna say, that's incredible. And you're right Jose, 180 is a bit too old for a girl in her twenties. |

LOL my poor english failed me miserably - I meant to say he turned around 180 degrees from his past musical tastes, and the sentence came out totally equivocal - sorry for the false alarm LOL

Welcome to the forums....My son is mid-20's and also enjoys the depth of music that you do. You will not find a majority of people in your age group who do, but they are out there. Just listen to who you want and who you find compelling. You will eventually find others who do, too, this was a pretty smart choice of a place to ask. And kudos to you for following your ears and not those of the crowd.

Welcome aboard!
My 26 year old daughter is a Big prog fan, particularly the avant, I may be to blame, she's been to Nearfest, ProgDay and RIO and a bunch of concerts. The artist Emme Phyzema on here is a 20 something female artist from Ohio, met her at last years RIO where she was there as a fan. Checkout her music on bandcamp, good stuff. |

My 23 years old daughter is a fan of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard (she loves grunge too) (I believe the band has been approved for inclusion here at PA)

Well welcome to the forum... interesting dilemma you have there. One that we often hear just as much from young men. Digging all that hip hop sh*t and wanting to be hip and cool.. which well.. this music largely is NOT hahahha. Dear... one thing I think you should consider. Music is very much a personal thing.. you don't really need friends to share a love of.. what matter is how that music afflect you and speaks to you personally and perhaps it is just me. That is a terribly difficult concept to verbalize.. to try to explain to others. Perhaps it is just me and why I generally suck as a reviewer.. some do perhaps have that gift.. but think it a rare one. If you do feel the need to share the love you have the right place.. but don't lose sight of what it is really important.. your personal connection and experiences with that music. and I may add.. I've seen many a young lady at prog shows.. what I think is rather common though, especiailly in the non hip-hop category which is more a cultural thing than a musical thing.. is for many in the younger generation.. genres.. are really quite irrelevant. I rememeber making this point at a prog show my wife went to.. we were seated right next to a bunch of rather.. young.. ladies.. who probably had zero concept or notion that what they were seeing was considered prog. They were there.. and loving the concert simply because it was great music. something perhaps to ponder.. and again.. welcome to the site.

The owner of this blog is a Dutch woman in her 20's, and a huge prog fan (though she likes stuff I don't particularly care for: https://notyourtypicaldutch.wordpress.com/ She is Dutch, but lives in Milwaukee. I am sure she is also a member here, I don't think she's been around lately. She's on Facebook though, in case you want to contact her there. Unfortunately, though I am a woman, I could easily be your mother. Female prog fans are rare, but young female prog fans are almost non-existent. Anyway, since you're from Maryland, you could do worse than visit the legendary Orion Studios when they resume their prog showcases in the fall.

20s aged female prog lovers are a rare species. My daughter, who is spending her last days before going 24, sticks at a certain distance: she likes the Beatles and Muse.
She has turned 30 recently. She has launched a few blogs here on PA some years ago. Her greatest exploit I remember was a 100-minute interview with Big Big Train's David Longdon.

^^^^ Yes, great photo Ian!
Glad to see some young people of any gender take an interest in prog of old and new, but females are rare here. Welcome to the site Rayne and I do like your member profile name of "knonfusedkhemist". That could almost be a new King Crimson album title with emphasis on the K .
