Progressive Pop was the original name of that genre.  In recent days it has also been Prog-Related and now it is Prog-influenced.  Tomorrow who know what it will be.  But since I helped write the definiton although I don't really agree with the category at all this is the best description i could find (I am not a big genre fan):

Prog-Influenced
Rock and Pop Bands and Artists after 1970 who were not truly “prog” (as that term is generally and broadly defined, even by the site), but who were clearly not “mainstream” or simply “rock” bands.

A wide subgenre that encompasses two kinds of bands/artist, that either consist of progressive artist that strayed away from their progressive roots into mainstream rock or were influenced by progressive rock.

Even though the music by these artists is sometimes unrelated it had things in common with prog music in that it was very structured and even adventurous, sometimes hard or heavy, sometimes mellow, strong melodies, good hooks are an integral part of most of the material. Sometimes these artists pioneered other rock genres.

Though most of these artist can't really be considered progressive themselves, their relation to progressive music is not to be underestimated.

In all fairness to this post I went and Downloaded the 4 Primus MP3 and listened to them last night.   I agree they don't belong in the prog influenced but by the same token I would not put them in art rock. They have almost a space metal feel to the music if those samples are a fair representive of their overall sound.  Look through the gneres descriptions and let me know what you think.  I cannot move them myself but I can lobby for them.

But Primus is so hard to categorize.I wouldn't call them art rock or progressive pop. With the definition that Garion provided I think they would be prog-influenced.

the tracks on the website are there most progresive  there ussual stuff is alot funkier but still progresive so those songs arent really a great representation of primus

The only Styx album I know since I acquired it when it was released is "The Grand Illusion". I suppose that I liked it then since I spent money for it. However, I started to play it again recently after...er...20 years in the shelve, and did not stand more than 5 minutes. Today it sounds a bit like sub-Saga to my ears. So I would tend to classify it under "pre or proto-neo-prog. I don't know about Primus (except the Belgian beer of the same name). If it sounds like styx, I sure don't like.

While on the subject of genre classification, I noticed that all classical Genesis are in the "symphonic prog" subclass while Steve Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte is in "Art Rock". Don't understand. The same way, KC's Larks Tongues in Aspic and Anekdoten's Vemod are in different subclasses. Strange since the latter always compares to the former.

I approved of the move over to prog influenced. No matter how different Styx and Primus are they both fit into the description, but i dont think they fit anywhere other than there or art rock. I dont really know which category is more appropriate however, but if it fits in the description im fine with it.

Description changed for Art Rock:

This was the original name of progressive rock music. We now use this within the umbrella of Prog or Progressive Rock as category that is used to refer to explorative works by bands that cross different genres or have an experimental nature that is not specific to one genre. Some of these bands may have had roots in other prog categories in their early years but later became more AOR or mainstream or vise versa starting out mainstream then becoming prog. These bands are considered primarily to be prog bands.

Primus is really their own genre.  There isn't another band that sounds like them.  I think art rock was probably the best place to put them in, though.

Apparently you've never heard 80's Crimson, who Primus owes much of their sound to.
