Topic: Prog Influenced Posted: September 20 2005 at 22:13 |
Hey, I'm glad you guys added this a sepertate category. It's
definitely fitting for Supertramp, Alan Parson's Projrct,
etc...(although I wish Styx wasn't on here period ). I was just wondering what the rest of you thought about this new category on the website.

I love the idea. It will give me a good idea of what bordering on prog bands I should check out next.
I've bought a lot of stuff lately that is either prog influenced or very creative pop....
Beach Boys- Today/Summer Days (and summer nights)
Smashing Pumpkins- Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
The Zombies-Oddesey and Oracle
The Flaming Lips- Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
The Flaming Lips- Transmissions from a satellite heart
And they all are excellent. I highly suggest them to the
adventurous progger who wants something a bit more conventional, yet
unconventional simultaneously

Heres an idea: Can you guys include only the prog influenced albums by
these bands? that would, for example, allow albums like the
aforementioned Mellon Collie to be inducted without inducting their
grunge output.

Does this mean different albums by the same artist will be in different genres??

My congratulations to Prog Archives for this new subgenre. It's the right place for many bands that aren't prog but not mainstream too. I suggest, included in the prog influenced genre, subgenres like: "proginfluenced art-rock, prog influenced space rock or prog influenced metal". I think it would be a good idea when the list of groups grows and grows. In this way we will have the place for bands like rhapsody or nightwish (in the example of prog influenced metal), truly controversial.

I think this is all we wish for a long time ago. Finally we could separate the Genesis genious albums from the rubbish-Collins-popish era.

It can be argued much of the dance, trance and other dj mix music is prog-influenced . If you want a reference listen to Gong You Been Remixed - Gong's You master tapes - well - remixed for the dance floor. And Steve Hillage's name keeps coming up here......................

Good idea to tag albums under various genres, but will this mean non Prog bands with Prog influenced moment albums be included as well eg: WHO, QUO etc who have had prog moments but are not every album, let say 1 or 2 albums and especially bands who are not prog had, some proggish albums in 1967 etc.
I don't know if my suggestions will work.

I think it's a good idea, but it's rather a place for bands that are very close to prog...
No IRON MAIDEN

The first 2 albums of scorpions !
it sounds close to prog / very prog influenced to me :
Scorpions - Lonesome Crow ( Psychedelic hard rock ;-) ) Scorpions - Fly To The Rainbow ( More Conventional , but still.... special..)
Ok i dont really think these albums have place here anyway but what do you think about it ?

7th. son = Great album!! I believe that "Somewhere in Time" is as prog as Iron can be, too. Don't you agree?
About this thread: "Prog influenced" is a great idea for a sub-genre. But I'm not too fond of labelling albums wiht different genres. Maybe we can discuss a section called "prog albums by non-prog bands".

I also think this has been a very good idea. May I suggest Dire Straits' "Making Movies" and "Love Over Gold"? And yes, I also think that Iron Maiden is a bit prog influenced. Just listen to 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'.

Sorry, I don't agree with having yet another list - I use Prog Arch' because it is about Prog - you could end up having catagories for just about everything? 'Bands whos drummer once listened to a Beatles album owned by a flute player from a neo-prog band in the 70's' and on it goes. The links start to become far too tenuous. I would expect that most of you would generally agree that the bulk of acts in PA are, indeed, prog, but when you start to go down the 'influenced' route it all starts to get very vague. Then again, I may be wrong, I usualy am.
Nice to speak to you all again. All the best.
