My guess is that this subject has been addressed and debated ad nauseam / ad infinitum;

But, I'm also a member of our sister site MetalArchives, and I like that as members, we're offered the opportunity to use a half star in our rating system.

I really think we here at PA should switch to either a 10 star, or add half star (or ideally, both) abilities to our ratings.

Anyone have any thoughts on this matter?

Half star ratings would be excellent, but will never happen. Even if the owner of the site could be bothered to make the change, I believe the software of the website can't support such a change. (this has been discussed before and rejected for this reason)

Half stars might be useful for reviewers, but for readers it's probably frivolous and unnecessary.   Who cares if an album is given 3 or 3&1/2 stars, at that point it's not real helpful and the review itself becomes what matters.

I'd love to see the half star rating as well as MANY changes on this site but it's not meant to be. As time goes on i'm personally less worried about ratings. A third of the time they don't reflect my own personal take on a particular album. It simply points to where the masses stand regarding an album at any given moment.

It would be interesting to see how many classic prog albums were rated forty years ago. Where did they stand in the day of their release? I bet it would blow our minds how things have changed in that time and likewise an album that has one rating today may be discovered as the next classic several years from now and become the next best thing. It's all rather subjective and fleeting in the big scheme of things. I agree with my pear friend. Reviews tell much more than ratings.

^ From what I tend to see, the reviews of prog in its day were less than stellar.   But then Zep were consistently panned too.   It proves if people dig it, no one really cares what a critic thinks.   Thank God.

Jim, I scientifically rated your suggestion with 2.15 (out of 10)

I care. Even more when it's 4, 41/2 or 5. So many albums where four stars feels too little and five too much. Besides most have learned that there's a huge differnece between an average of 3,40 and 3,90 although ist only a matter of a halfstar. All that said I haven't actually looked at PA-ratings in years but that's another story.
