A very experimental effort from KC. Personally, I find it to be genious, not their but, but a near-masterpiece.

I agree with everything said here. LTIA took me many many years to get into, but once it finally sank in, it became only second to Red among my favorite KC albums.

I love this album, probably their most progressive effort

I voted for "very good". I think this album has wonderful songs, and it directed the band towards their best musical phase (IMO). But many of the studio recordings are bit sterile compared to some live recordings of these songs... "Book of Staurday" is an exeption. Bill restrains from playing (Fripp locked him up in the closet ), and the changing sololines from violin and backwars played guitar are marvelous! The opener track is also good, with long layers of abstract sounds, but the best version of this one I have heard was from NY concert 1973. On the same concert the also made a great version of Easy Money with a great jam tied to it at the end. There's also a video of it moving around... That song has been done in many different ways on concert, and I somehow find the studioversion bit weak. Exiles is wonderful here as studioversion, with piano parts which are bit rare on 72-74 phase I think. Best liveversion of it is at their last 70's concert from America, with very surrealistic opening improv. "Talking Drum" / "LTiA2" is also OK here, but I don't like the sound on these versions. "LTiA2" has also many good, bit differing liveversion of it, but the closing number at their farewell gig mentioned previously has the best version with "Talking Drum".
My favourite prog!

What a superb album ... only complaint is that the first Larks Tongue spends too much time on low volume ... (a common problem I have with this group)

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”
"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

^ I think the idea with these low-volume sections is, that you sholud listen the album at very high volume. There's similar volume alterations in "Exiles". It's quite unigue way of mixing album, preveting casual listening. One should aslo have good soundsystems and original copy, to minimalize hiss when listening with analog equipment, which people had at early 70's.

It's an excellent album, one of KC's best. IMO, though, it's somehow marred by Wetton's vocals, which at the time were not as good as they became later on. It's true that it was the first time the guy sang lead, but at times he sounds really flat. As I said some time ago in another such thread, I can only imagine how wonderful Exiles and Book of Saturdays woul've sounded had they been sung by Greg Lake...

I rhink they do this to make an atmospheric sound, so when the heavy parts come in they sonud twice as heavy...
An other thing, have you noticed that between 1973-4 no other band sounded as heavy and hard as KC...not even Black Sabbath

Yeah, they are considered by many to be the fathers of metal (even by themselves )
The mix between heavy and soft is great, the atmosphere is great. The only track I (partially) dislike is The talking drum, I find it a little boring at long. The rest is awesome, especially considering the HUGE change of style from the first era (ITCOTCK to Islands)
Only complaint: I find it (and many other KC albums) a bit too dark...

Not their best ever, but an astonishing and highly successful reinvention (which they would do again with Discipline). The live versions of the LTIA material from 73 - 74 show just how great this incarnation of Crimson was - it's just a shame there's no good quality recording of any of the concerts with Jamie Muir.
