What is a good lyric? Almost everyone I imply this idea to (I don't actually ask them) and they always refer to metaphors.  I beleive a good lyric would not be so much as "deeper" but a level of deepness does need to be used, but I think it would use poetic devices in such an intricate way so that you know whats going on, and anyone could enjoy it because of how the poetic devices have made them seem.  I really want to know what you think a good lyric entails.
Extraordinary how potent cheap music is...

A good mix of metaphor and reality.. if thats a way to put it. Not so wildly 'symbolic' that you cant in your life decipher the song meaning (close to the edge.. ) and not so blatant that you know the meaning after one song listen. I like to dig for song meaning, but i dont want to spend hours doing it.

Something that's a pleasure to listen to, with playful, colorful imagery, that reveals deeper meaning with further examination.  Basically, something that can be enjoyed on many levels.

I like lyrics to paint pictures.  I honestly don't care if the song tells a story, or even if it has a meaning at all.  I just want the lyrics to complement the soundscapes and let me live them.  That's why I like Jon Anderson so much.  His lyrics take me to a better place.  With some exceptions of course, like Gates of Delirium, the ultimate anti-war song - which actually makes a statement, therefore proving that Jon can write like that if he wants to.

Anyway .... for me personally its just expression...... even plainly simple songs if expressed poetically really appeal to me, & the most complex themes are sometimes totally spoilt by poor expression

Poetry is the feelings you can read between the lines...not only formal word and language exercise!

Poetry is to try to express simply something unexpressable!
