What color is this and why are people wearing it like it's the latest fashion?

The color is a fluorescent version of a lemon/lime crossover. I can't tell why anyone would wear it. I don't want to be seen in it myself.

I never wore it but I would pay a huge fine if I wouldn't have one in the car.

There's no great conspiracy, Steve! It's just standard issue wear for a lot of people in physical jobs - builders, tradies (OK, maybe that's an Aussie term!), etc - where everyone has to be visible to ensure safety! Same too if someone is entering a potentially dangerous area!

I think that's what you were kind of asking, yeah?

Sure, they want you to be visible to ensure your safety . . . or could it be it's their safety they want to ensure? Imagine if they got everyone to wear these, just like they got everyone to carry a cell phone -- how easy it would be to spot you from a satellite.

Whew, that's a relief! I was afraid it was the standard uniform of another religious cult waiting to board a spaceship on the chosen day! LOL

Well, Steve, us religious cult members are encouraged to deflect attention away from our secret uniform of choice at every opportunity when people start asking questions, so....

Yep, as Michael said these are just standard work wear for just about any sort of manual labour.

But even if you aren't a contractor, these can be pretty handy to have, actually. Put one of those babies on, carry around a clipboard, and you can get into anywhere! If anyone asks what you're doing there, just say you're "from the city" and they'll let you through, no questions asked. LOL

Man, I never thought of that! Pretty sure they're opening up some new `exotic gentlemen's club' over the road from work here, might have to don one of these babies, grab a clipboard and head over there and do a `surprise safety inspection' - especially the backstage area where the lovely ladies are - they need the most protection!

Just make sure that you don't go at the same time someone who's actually from the city is doing some sort of inspection. In that case, you should always have a backup plan - tell them you're from the state!

I'd just spin it back on them, Kevin - "Wait a minute, you're not really the safety inspectors are all, are you?!"

Consider this: The brightest, most visible color you can wear during daylight hours is fluorescent yellow-green. Why? Human eyes are built to be most sensitive to that particular wavelength of light (~550 nanometers), at least during the day.

I thought this was gonna be another 'blue/tan dress vs. gold/black dress'.

Actually it seems the florescent vest has become a bit of a fashion trend.  Kinda like jacket liners five years ago.

There's quite a few soccer/football teams wearing that colour now as an alternative 'change' kit. Drug testing should be mandatory for the designers.
