It's Autumn, which, for me, means Nursery Cryme by Genesis!

So today, whilst taking a walk in the nearby woods and listening to the album, I noticed something I've never noticed before in "The Musical Box".

At about 1:42 in the song, Phil's background vocal comes in, and it sounds like he's saying "Now now now now now". I never thought much of it, but today it struck me; Is this a little bit of foreshadowing of the epic "NOW! NOW! NOW! NOW! NOW!" that Peter screams at the song's climax? Could it be that this album is even more clever than I had already thought?

I don't know if any of you have noticed this before. if it's common knowledge, please forgive me. But I just felt the need to start a topic about it with some people who might appreciate it!

The backing vocals come in and seem to simply be singing na na na, which shows up in other Genesis songs, and is a standard syllable for singing, much like la or oh. Still, it does sound quite close, perhaps close enough that your point is accurate. Not sure if it was intentional, I'd guess no.

It sounds more like "la la la" to me but I really don't know for sure.

That's the way I always thought it was: intentional and a bit of foreshadowing. Things like that are what separate great prog from just prog.

Agreed! I just love that after so many years of listening to this great album, something new can jump out at me and deepen my appreciation of it.

What mix of the song are you listening to? The mid-'90s'? The 2006? The Nick Davis one? Earlier? The song that stands out on 'Crymes with a very audible Collins is Harlequin, but I haven't been able to detect what you describe on 'Box.

I can't really tell if it's a "la" or a "now" but there are some good backing vocals on that song, particularly on the Genesis Live version.

I got around to listen for this--used an equalizer and a balance knob to pull it out--and it is as you say.

I was listening to the 2006 mix when it jumped out at me.
