hey prog fellas...

I'm kind of in a prog crisis... First I thought I'd love prog music simply due to the factor of erasing musical limits...

First of all I have to say I'm probably a lot younger than most of you here n that might be the poin that I didn't experience the 70's etc...

I came to prog as I found The Mars Volta. In the first place I hated it n found Bixlers voice too strange but with time passed the stuff grew on me and I f**ken love it now because it's so experimental and different to the rest of the music that often started to bore me...

I grew up with my dads music like Floyd, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull n all that stuff... figured out that this is to a big part old prog stuff... n I like it.

I researched the net n bought myself some CDs that were considered to be heroes of bands I like (rush - Smashing pumpkins; King Crimson - TMV) and other big names of the Progmusic like a Porcupine Tree...

But the synthy wannabe spacy sound of PT and the singers voice sucked and I just thought it was lame n had nothing special to it. Rush is real strange as well and I can't understand what's so special about Moving Pictures... I'm more into rockier or more psychedelic stuff with a lot of groove(that's why I dig stoner rock as well though it's often real simply made...)

On the other hand I really think KC in the court... is the SH#T!!! and I like it...

but stuff like Dream Theater or Spocks beard simply sucks n is dumb fiddleing(being a guitar player) that bores me...

Some nites ago I saw a live set of Nektar and I really liked it and i guess I'll get some CDs of them...

So is it just that I picked the wrong bands or are PT or Rush really prog typical(ok I know that's kind of stupid cos you know... it's PROG)... but should I look more into Art Rock stuff?? I think just using keyboards n stuff n playing fast isn't very progressive to me...

Sounds like this lad needs some Van Der Graaf Generator, Hawkwind (c.
1973) and Magma ASAP!

Yeah, Hawkwind is a good suggestion, but be careful what albums you get. I would reccomend the following:

Live Chronicles
Levitation
Hall of the Mountain Grill

Also Green by Steve Hillage and anything by The Ozric Tentacles

For now, at least I would avoid anything by Yes, Genesis or ELP. I reckon you'll hate it!! Check out a few MP3's before you proceed with anything 'symphonic' like that.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Explore KC, but slowly. All of a sudden you'll find an album you hate, at least at first. Gentle Giant are also worth a look. I can't imagine anyone that's seriously into music not being able to find at least one prog album to his taste just because it's so diverse.

If you're into jazzier stuff, Gong should fulfill any needs you have for psychedelic music.

Agree completly on that one. If you like more simple music then this is it. Depending on exactly what you like venturing before atom heart monther could be risky but I'd say anything between that and the wall is brilliant.

I reccomend Wish You Were Here or Animals since your a guitar player you'll love these.

Well McGarnical Billy is dead! They slit his throat from ear to ear!

Eh?

Early Gong for psychedelia, mid 70's Gong for jazzier prog, Gongzilla for 21st Century jazz rock fusion

If you haven't heard any early Rush stuff, you should give it a try, their 70's stuff is significantly different from their 80's stuff.

Or you could try what I did at first; click on random bands on this site and download mp3s until you find something you like.
