Bill Bruford (no need to introduce this person, I suppose?) had had written on his shoes "I hate Keith Moon" and claimed the reason for it that "He is not a drummer, he just hits things".

This gave me a wicked idea of asking you to name music personalities (either prog or non prog), which you think are impostors, i.e. can't play their instrument, sing or make a single good tune at all and whom you therefore despise.

It is something like Kelly Bundy ("Married with Childre") TV show, so please don't ban me for that.

My first proposals are James Hetfield and Kurt Cobain (I know you American fellows gonna kill me for that)

Please don't mention Johnny Rotten, Britney Spears or Michael Jackson, since they're obvious.

yet you still have time!

Ringo Starr
Ozzy Osbourne
Robbie Williams

etc...

I'm sure there's loads, but I dont despise them at all They're ok, and probably more fun on a night out than Bill Bruford..

Bruford might be a great drummer, but he's clearly a complete t**ser! Keith Moon was a great drummer, as well as an entertainer

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Ringo Starr
Nick Mason
Every member of every single boyband ever!

...Bruford is awesome, never mock him.

I was about to say Meatloaf, who cannot play anything, doesn't write his songs, and as regards his singing abilities, there are hundred better performers.

But he's so nice an entertainer...no, no, I don't feel like pointing my finger at him!

Ringo Starr? Ok, he's not top of the virtuoso list as a drummer, but he's not so bad...listen to his work on Rain and in general in all of the Revolver album...very clean, moreover!
IMHO he's better than Charlie Watts of Rolling Stones

And what's wrong with Nick Mason? Once again, he's not flamboyant, but he provides a flawless rhythm structure

Robbie Williams has a very nice voice and does know how to give interpretation to the songs he (by the way) writes (or co-writes).

(What I've done here in Italian is referred to as "being the devil's lawyer"...meaning to take defense of somebody turned down by everybody... )

They're all rubbish.  Especially Ringo, Robbie and Nick.  Nothing will ever convince me otherwise.

to BiGi - advocati diaboli are warmly welcome but you may also let your anger out, that was purpose of posting this topic. Of course it is not necessary. BTW Italian rock is great.

Spectral - you are from Holy See actually? Are you a priest, a nun or Swiss Guardian? (probably not Pope himself?) Nice avatar though.

The Tangent - The World We Drive Through ... the vocals suck. They may be masters of their instruments, but they're not good vocalists.

Les Claypool's vocals are also VERY questionable ... maybe it's not his fault, with the hearing impediment and playing bass simultaneously ... but sometimes it really sounds HIDEOUS.

I would agree he is a terrible lead player, and an un-remarkable 'rhthym' player, he's not that bad a classical guitarist. The examples are few and far between, sadly. I think the Hawks were a lazy band who never pushed themselves or each other as musicians. 'The Demented Man' from 'Warrior on the Edge of Time' shows that Brock could play a good acoustic guitar part, and write good melodies.

Sh!t singer though...

I saw Brock playing with Hawklords yearsb ago. To my dismay Brock played the whole concert with simply putting his stretched index finger over the frets and going up and down the fretboard! Obviously the guitar had been tuned so he could do this but I was nonplussed!

I love the Hawk, but yes, Brock's not exactly a virtuoso. Not a great singer
either. But a great perseverer and useful as a symbol of past hippie
glories. He's written some nice tunes, too.

The Hawk was at its best when Calvert was in. He wasn't the world's best
singer, but an improvement and a great showman.

90% of those guys playing in detuned mope metal bands (Nickelback,
anyone?) have blown 4000$ on a PRS guitar but can't play their way out of
a paper bag. Don't solo any time soon, guys, please...we wouldn't want
you to break a sweat. And the vocals....ick. Ever heard of vocal
harmonies?

Therefore I declare them all imposters. I bite my thumb at them!

I have my own personal rule: it's not HOW you reach a sound...it's the final result that matters!
So I'm not complaining about players being no "virtuosi" when the accomplished overall result satisfies me.

That's MY opinion, obviously!

I agree about The Tangent (though I only listened to The Music That Died Alone), Roine Stolt can't sing - but I won't call him impostor.
