I found this article about a little village in Austria that freqently has its sign stolen - especially by English tourists... can't think why.

http://www.snopes.com/photos/signs/austria.asp

...actually, I can't think why BOTH signs don't get stolen simultaneously

Does anyone else know of, or come from an amusingly named town?

And in Finnish:
pula s 1 shortage, lacks 2 (puute) dearths (vaikea tilanne) 3 trouble, scrape, bind (a bind) 4 fix, jam Nyt ollaan pulassa Now we're in a fixs 5 tal crisis (mon crises), depression, crunch
jättää jk pulaan let down (let, let), leave sb in the lurch (left, left)
[pahassa] pulassa (vaikeassa tilanteessa) in a pinch
paha pula deep water pahaan pulaan into deep water
olla pulassa 1 in a [tight] corner 2 be up the creek [without a paddle]

There are some place names in Finland with a 'bad' meaning, like Myrkky (poison) or Taantumus (regression). Not to mention several names that have something to do with intimate bodyparts... (but they're not towns, only some desolate country places).

This is not really a amusing but more a strange name. It is a town in the eastern part of Germany,in  a region which was very poor. The town name is Elend=Misery.

There's a town in France called Condom.

Even better, a mate of mine used to live in Northampton and there's a street there called Bell End.

In Kentucky there are two towns a few hours apart named Beaver Lick and Knob Lick.  Use your imagination.

But my favorite is Butte, Idaho, a few hours from where I grew up in Montana.  The mascot for the high school there is the Pirates.  Too funny!

There is a small village in Western-Hungary called Pornóapáti.

The name comes from a German landholder called Pernau  in the 11th century and the local Abbey.

   The current name suggests:Porn Abbey.

In Pennsylvannia, USA there is an Amish town called Intercourse.  It is not too far from Bird-in-Hand!
