Most likely a topic has been started on the subject, but I can't seem to find it. So I decided just to start a new one.
So, what do you think of the jazz rock, alternative rock, hard rock, psychedelic rock, funk rock, blues, folk rock, bluegrass, jam rock, latin alternative....I'll just stop there because that's enough genre's to classify them. ![]() So, what do you think of Phish? ![]() |

Here is the existing Phish Appreciation Thread. Lots of good stuff in there.
http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=78932&KW=phish I was fanatical about them roughly from 1992 to 1998. I went to about 18 shows during that time period, including the historic Halloween 1996 show. Oddly, though, I have been unable to get excited about any of their newer albums or concert recordings. After '98, my best friend and fellow Phish nut moved out of town, so I lost my concert buddy, and haven't seen the band live since then. |

I'm about to explore the world of Phish.
First was The Wedge (14 mins) which was ok. Then Chalk Dust Torture (28 mins) was more of the same, with no enough happening to merit it being twice as long as the first piece. Nice whooshing sounds here and there, but the tedious jamming can bugger off. Edited by Stool Man - January 17 2015 at 23:03 |

OK, having given Phish two hours of attention, I think they're ok but nothing special.

I'm not crazy about jam bands, but Phish is pretty cool. I like when they cover classic albums live. The Quadrophenia cover was great.

Phish is one of my favorite bands. I'm not familiar with their studio albums, a part from Junta (amazing), becaise I tend to listen to shows only, where they really shine.
Part 2 It's a shame I won't ever be able to see them live though, since they only tour the US now. ![]() Of course the fact they jam so much makes them boring sometimes, but when they nail it, they totally blow my mind. |

I do respect that they can play for sometimes a half an hour per track when playing live. Now that's impressive.

I think their ideal jam length is in the 10-20 minute range. I haven't heard many more than 20 minutes that really held my attention. There are one or two wonderful exceptions, though (12/29/94 Bowie, for starters. wowowoww). Around 1998 they started stretching beyond 20 minutes fairly regularly, mainly vamping on a funk/space riff that was a lot of fun to groove to in concert, but which doesn't translate as well to listening at home.

Though their jams may not be spectacular, but I still do appreciate it and I'm sure anyone else would too, am I correct in saying that?

Oh by the way, I wouldn't recommend listening to live jams as an introduction and instead check out studio material more. Mostly recommending Rift and A Picture of Nectar. Can't forget Junta and Lawn Boy. |

For those who really want to hear what Phish were capable of, here's the A Live One Tweezer. Thirty minutes of fluid weirdness:
