They don't sound of prog from what I've heard but since the little I've heard didn't feel like making me listen to any more I was willing to write them off and go about my merry way.  Tried listening to their highest rated album but I couldn't make it the whole way through, it was so weak.  I swear the room started turning pink about halfway through and I had to turn it off.

Time always wins.

Dude, that's soo 1980's; today we live in a politically correct society...egalitarian.  All that gender-specific crap is thrown out, the feminists want chicks to also be called "dudes."

Don't be fooled! Avoid them at all costs.

That is, of course, WalterDigsTunes speak for 'If it was made after 1979 it's crap'. He wouldn't know. Just give it up, Walter. He asked a question you can't answer, as you're not a fan of the band.

You know, on the web people like that are often called trolls, and kicked out.... Here, we choose the 'softer' option, and cover them in ridiculeWink. In my book, using terms like 'fooled' is highly offensive, and people who choose to use them deserve anything coming to them.

As to Rael, well.. Sorry you don't care about my 'precious' integrity. I, on the other hand, couldn't care less that you're not around often, and, seen your attitude, I would recommend you stop visiting altogether. Wise people don't want to be associated with a band of fools as we seem to be. And yes, there are reasons why I was made a SC.... One of them was that I did never, ever start a thread like this.

Why don't you cry about it some more, that will make you feel better.

If I'm labeled as a troll, I may as well play the part.

No flame war, don't worry... I don't have anything else to say, and won't contribute any more to this thread. Let those who think we're gullible idiots keep on thinking so - it's a free world, after all.

oh yeah... the topic on hand hahah.

To bring this topic back full-circle.... are the Decemberists a PROG band?

forget the site... hard as that is to do for some...

what happens to when the Decemberists put out their next album...  I'll lay 20 bucks down here and now for each person in this thread that their next album will NOT be a HoL pt 2.   They will progress... go somewhere new and do it with the same great music and lyrics and intelligence fans of the group have come to love....and expect.   However will it be flat-out prog-rock.   Somehow I don't think the driving goal of this group is to please progheads and put out scores of albums in this vein.

they ... major label or not.... march to their own beat.   For the sake of their explorations and artistic interests.  If they wanted commerical success and selling albums... well... they simply haven't done that.  On the cusp of commercial success and fame after TCW...  they went for the throat... and put out an album that DIDN"T EVEN HAVE a single that Capital could market.

so.... do the Decemberists have people on this site fooled... are they a prog band?  I know one thing... Meloy and company will not lose sleep over being considered one or not...  all they are concerned about I suspect is pushing their own artistic and musical boundries.  I'll be the first to say.. but I'm sure not the first to think.

The next Decemberists album will be the most eagarly anticipated album I will ever looked forward to.  How will they top it...  which direction...what direction will they go next.

^ That's what I like most about them and that's why they're better than the hoards of "modern" prog bands that recycle the '70s sound.  The Decemberists are at their prime right now because they have the confidence to go from indie-popularity then sign a big deal and record The Island and Crane Wife...and then go a step further and come up with Hazards of Love.  I'm genuinely excited about their next album already.

I think a big reason why they won't appeal to some prog rock fans is that indie thing they still have going on.  I personally love it (but then again, I'm also a fan of Wilco, MMJ, Delta Spirit, etc).  It's refreshing to hear something complex and intelligent without all the fruity synthesizers and repitition.

I think O Valencia! could be quite an interesting hit single for rock/alternative audiences. The same goes with Yankee Bayonet , The Perfect Crime 2 and Summersong. There are some bands that could hit the airwaves big time and The Decemberists is one of them.

that's simply a provocation, is that what you intend?  Besides, "new band" ?  They've been around for over 9 years.

Why don't you look for another forum where to troll and leave us alone? YOU are a waste of space, not the 'silly new band'. Learn to respect other people's opinions and taste, or get the hell out of here.

No, Hugh Laurie, I think.

I'm sure in that episode it was a Les Paul. If you're thinking of the episode where towards the end of it he pulls out a guitar, yeah, that was an LP.

I've worked my way through the thread and apart from saying that I quite like The Decemberists, I'd take my hat off to ~Rael~ if I had one.

His original post had the effect of opening a door to a room full of people, throwing in a hand grenade and sitting back to watch the fun. Very amusing. Smile
