hmmm....  a big fan of Rush.  Good for you... Rush are Gods you know.

Forget those who recommended Red... it's a good album...but  you need to hear the first, In the Court of Crimson King,  where the whole damn thing really started, and start from there. As a Rush fan... you ought to get a kick out of Moonchild.  Something right up your alley LOL

I feel that ITCOTCK is too much of a shock for any Rush fanatic (as it was for me - I didn't touch it for months after hearing it for the first time). Red is more accessible and then after Red can you handle the debut.

reading between the lines of that post Ben gives me Rush-fanatic jokes for a week..LOL

you aren't implicitly saying that Rush fans are unable to handle a real progressive rock album are you LOL.  A shock?... the damn album is 40 years old... it was ground-breaking then... but any music fan today should have no problem digesting that.

I'm curious.. what was so shocking about it?

Yes I specifically put those in for you Micky Big%20smile

What was so shocking about it???

It's almost silent for 30 seconds and then you get hit by the opening riff of Schizoid Man. If you're not prepared for it then you get freaked out. Well I did anyways.

hahhahahha thanks for the fresh ammo there...

it is a great opening isn't it Clap  My first KC album was LTiA and when that guitar riff came crashing after that long quiet intro... I damn near dove behind the couch. LOL

ah, here is what I dislike so much about our healthy progressive opinion

why is Moonchild loathed for its beautiful sound improvisation?

I based my first impression of King Crimson on that. I was reluctant to listen to them, finally my dad convinced, I listened to half the album alone until he joined me in the room, Moonchild was playing, and he remarked: "what do you hear in this? isn't it just unusual what they played, so minimal and of pure improvisation".

Therefore, I can't believe how stereotypical the impression of "ITCOTCK is an absolute masterpiece.....but Moonchild is its only flaw" is among fans.

I don't call ITCOTCK a masterpiece, because I have myself some small points for it. But they're certainly not for Moonchild, that piece is fantastic.

ditto, Moonchild is a good track, nothing goes wrong for me with it, and now I'm going to hear this great King Crimson album. But in a thread like this we should be trying to talk about new art rock groups and trying to call attention to those bands, not the Gods Of Prog, as everyone practically knows them.

sorry guys ....I agree with Greg Lake on this one.  Throwing sh*t on the wall is arty as hell.... but it still smells.

Call me an 'improv taliban' LOL.... but you should listen to the Allman Brothers if you want to hear great improvisation. Next to them.... Moonchild sounds exactly what it was.... filler on an album.  Same as that ungodly final track on the Blind Faith album... not enough original material to fill an album leads to making things longer than they should be... or just noodling on your instruments for how ever long to fill the time and space.

OK, some recent additions worth checking out; Gosta Berlings Saga, Zen Carnival, Dezo Ursiny, Carphanaum

and a very good upcoming one, Rebel Wheel

not to mention Yang, Sleeping People, Interpose+, Astrid Proll, Pye Fyte, Taal

No one is saying Moonchild is the only "intricate" improvisation of that period. But being included such an art moment in such a popular and prominent album should mean a lot of influence and shine for it.

For me the moment is great. They do a bit of soft rock jam, with moods and vicious strings, after which they simply fall into a meditation. Slumber colors, still points of reflection, abstract music.

mmm!!!

Sorry to disrupt your Moonchild debate, just wanted to post about NAIKAKU.
Their album Shell is a fantastic instrumental (crunchy) rock performance, with flute as well!
Naikaku is one of those bands that keeps me in such thirst for more after I'm done listeing to them, and is one of those bands that keeps me enthusiastic about new music coming out, that is just excellent even though it is relatively far away from the attention of the masses.
Some samples can be listened to here:

I join, generally, the voice that says Naikaku is a great new band, the veracious touch of their music combines really interesting nuances and moves.
