But it took me some time to get TPT, but I will say I don't think I ever thought of their music as boring or generic. I just did not listen much to it........Then one day Someone Here Is Missing, hit me, and the song 3000 Days I really got into. Sure they are more atmospheric, probably why you also list Anathema, but that seems to be the norm with today's newer music, much more emotional, atmospheric, moody and dark. I will say the new album is excellent and having Gavin Harrison on drums has added another layer to their music. The previous drummer Keith Harrison was excellent also, especially on Someone Here Is Missing.

I really enjoy atmospheric music, I like my mind taking me places that the music leads it to instead of being forced down a strict path that more direct music can do.  Maybe I like boring music...but it doesn't bore me. The individual at work again within the framework of someone else's creation.

Very much agree, but too much of a good thing can be bad! I need some hard prog/rock/metal too as too much atmospheric can get depressing.

That's why a wide-ranging palate is a good thing to have.  Smile

Agree.......I can go from Dream Theater to Peter Gabriel to John Coltrane to The Cars to Earth Wind & Fire to King Crimson.......How can music be boring? Like mentioned previously, the listener makes it such.

Not in my world! Smile

Yep...Limited only by your knowledge and imagination when it comes to music.

I like a lot of world music as well, having had a lot of exposure to Middle Eastern music in my time...lots of interesting time signatures there and beautiful instruments.  Especially when they mix in electric instruments, so much fun.  As I said somewhere in these forums already, it is hard to think of a Top 10 list of acts, songs, "albums," , when you have at least a Top 10 of genres that you enjoy.

And yes, there is some stuff out there that just drives me nuts, I don't like everything, either.  But I'd rather focus on what I do like and try to sniff out more of it.

Guilty pleasure for him, we all have them. She has an amazing voice, I have 21 on vinyl and spin it on occasion. I am more a fan of Madonna, more my era. I like her voice on early albums, I also like Sade, both of their voices have body, not girly sounding. Diana Krall has a great voice also.......
But my guilty pleasures would be Madonna and Sade.....Then I spin some Iron Maiden Clap

My spectrum is probably classical to death metal. But Earth, Wind and Fire? I have to admit that Reggae, soul, motown and rap do not appeal whatsoever....maybe thats cultural programming as I was growing up...

That is wide-ranging...Adele has a great pop voice, not a fan of that genre that much, but can appreciate talent nonetheless.  I think it's her real voice, anyway, which is saying a lot these days.

Great voices there, too...Have you heard Mary Fahl (formerly October Project)?  Great contralto there, she's got a haunting version of Ben Aindi Habibi that she does and I loved OP's first LP and a lot of Mary's solo work (she performs all of Dark Side of the Moon live on occasion).  I really liked Madonna's La Isla Bonita...but not a fan of bullfighting, which isn't the issue here.

Neal Morse preaching is intolerable, such a pity as his music is sublime.

Well EW&F are brilliant, not gonna argue that on this site, zero appreciation for bands like that here. I have zero issue with Geddy, Jon and most of Labrie......Seriously Labrie today is very bad, his voice did not age like a fine wine. LOL

If I'm gonna listen to female vocalist they better be excellent...I'll check out Fahl.

Let me know what you think, you have a wide range of taste, so it will be interesting to hear.

For introduction, I do suggest Ben Aidi Habibi, solo and her Bury My Lovely with The October Project

But at the same time, when it comes to wild and sprawling areas of human activity such as music, they will always be inadequate to capture properly what is going on. This is a paradox we have to live with. We have to define, but we should never take these definitions so seriously that we forget, ignore or rule out what is not captured by them or what sits uncomfortably between "classes", "genres" etc.
...

Actually, we do not need "definitions" and it has been proved in theater for example. Peter Brook had, at one time in his workshop/theater in Paris something like 25/30 actors from 15 to 20 different places, and they could not speak to each other for the most part, and yet, rehearsals took  place and then ... you end up with THE MAHABHARATA ... which is an incredible piece of theater, if folks in a place like this had the inner peace and beauty to watch it.

Likewise, there were/are many experiments in music that involved improvisation without a solid idea of what things were, and one could say that early CAN material fit, that gave us things like TAGO MAGO, but that is something that we can not conceive, or understand, and sometimes ... music comes together in ways that we simply would not know about without these odd/weird mixes ... and things like early FAUST and a lot of the more experimental stuff that became better known as "krautrock" (the stuff that was much less "musical" and much more "experimental") that is listed in EUROCK, is something that we are afraid to look at and listen to ... none of it makes "any" sense, whatsoever, much like Peter Handke's short plays with words scrambled anywhere, also did not show a characterization or possible "communication" in any way that you and I can imagine, but ... somehow, well directed it works, and you can even use it as a "rap" exercise, and all of a sudden ... wow ... that's far out!

We have become convinced that everything that the human spirit "created" is the only truth ... and the real fact, specially for the arts where it is most visible, is THAT IT IS NOT THE ONLY TRUTH ... we simply have not the ability to find and listen and learn about new truths ... and this was a strong theme in science fiction 75 years ago ... have we learned nothing yet? We still can not grok anything!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I so agree, obviously.  Nice to hear that someone else is appreciative.  I'm thrilled to be able to see her next year in Portland, she usually sticks more to the east coast.
