Star Trek:The Motion Picture

Oy, where do I start with this exhausting first try at a film version of the original show.  The story is underdeveloped and implausible (even for Trek), our beloved characters all seem depressed and look embalmed, the pace is stretched out like hot taffy, and the first hour is so introductory in nature as to cause a 9 year-old boy to become drowsy.  And those are the good aspects.  Don't get me started on the costumes, makeup and lighting.  1979 fresh after Star Wars was not a ripe moment for this hump to be made and they should've waited for Wrath of Khan (which itself was made as if the first one never happened).  Maybe my bias was as a young fan of the show wanting ST at its best.  Instead we got some cast of characters and events almost unrecognizable from the series I loved.
"Star Trek The Motionless Picture" or "Where Nomad Has Gone Before"LOL

yeah it was a total Changeling rip

X-Men: First Class. First class action movie, very entertaining, as action hero movies go, 9/10 (the only 10/10 ever is for The Dark Knight)...

Source Code. Liked the movie. I figured out who the bomber was too quickly but got thrown a curve at the end. 7.5/10

Midnight in Paris

Nice one from Woody Allen with Owen Wilson as a good extension of the Allen character who stumbles into a time/space warp while in the City of Light that puts him in the 1920s.  Among the great artists and writers of the period, he develops relationships with various key figures and continues returning each night to hang out and party with them until it begins effecting his life in the present.  Pleasant and worth catching.

What I liked about this masterpiece was that the story line was so believable and realistic. The cinematography was also stunning. Inoshro Honda should have won an acedemy award for his efforts on this well thought out story. There were absolutely no plot oversights that you see on Star Trek TOS. If had to rate this brilliant picture I would have to give it 1000 stars out of 5.

^ that's a beautiful movie, right up there with King Kong for story and vision..  have you seen the original Japanese version without Burr?  Even better in many ways.

In the "so bad they're funny" category, I've been working my way through this DVD set...

Bad acting, half-baked plots, and TONS of nudity to make up for it.  There is a continuity to these movies, too...  they all focus on a government 'agency' of undercover babes and hunks who fight smugglers and crimelords that threaten US security.  There are several characters who appear in multiple movies, including a villain who is an elderly Asian in one and a mid-30's British Caucasian in the next (!).  There are also a ton of actors who show up as villains just to get killed, then return in the next.

Bad but fun.  I've just finished #8 of the series of 12.

Devil - Strangers are trapped in an elevator, and one of the strangers happens to be the devil. It's a devilator. This movie wasn't as bad as I expected it to be, but it still wasn't great. - 6/10

I'm glad you liked that. I saw it in a Parisian theatre and followed it with an evening walk, that was special. Wink
I have a personal relation with several elements of this film so I'm terribly biased about it, which is why I was curious how other woodites are receiving it. I love it and I don't know how I could rate it.

The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus
- seen this evening; very incomplete and difficult to understand, it felt like a screening of an early script draft, when many of the story elements were not yet connected / explained. Yet the many brilliant bits (from both the director and the actors) make the experience worthwhile, even if disappointing for those who love Gilliam and know his potential. My rating: 6/10 (good).

Mon Oncle - wonderful French comedy from 1958, seen because I wanted to dig into the background of the L'Illusioniste (a splendid animation from 2010), which is based on Mon Oncle and Jacques Tati's work in general. Goes to show that the character in L'Illusioniste does a great job at "reviving" Jacques Tati and his charisma, while not being a rip-off. L'Illusioniste is an 8/10 (excellent) for me, and for Mon Uncle I'm not sure (masterpiece or exceptional, so somewhere really up).

That's pretty close to my feelings, maybe a little more underwhelmed. They'd an interesting (reasonably so) concept to work with but seriously failed in the execution department. While everything was, kinda, tenuously linked together I found it not so hard to follow, but I know many were irked by its unsteady footing. I watched it with a group, half of them left and/or feel asleep within 45mins.

Been a long time since I've been able to sit through a whole movie, but last week broke a long drought. Watched Uzak (Eng: Distant) by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, a recent-ish director from Turkey. A simple story of human estrangement set in Wintery Istanbul. Lots of long shots with little happening, you know, the usual artsy bullsh*t, leading to a heightened sense of humility in our inability to connect with others. Some nice homages to Andrei Tartovsky too, nothing like watching people watch Tartovsky with the aim of boring there cousin to bed so they could watch porn :)

"Cocoon"-the pilot movie for the original Hawaii Five-O tv series from 1968
Pretty well done, and can be credited for creating interest in what was to follow. Unfortunately, Danno is done by a different actor, but then came James MacArthur, and the rest is history!
I would say that when the actual series picked up steam, it was better than this pilot, but the movie is still worthwhile-i won't go into a long explanation of the plot and ruin it for you-i give it 4 stars

Just watched "Tempest' again! What a great film. Great film score composed by my favorite master Stomu Yamashta who is now a conductor. John Cassavettes moves to a Greek island during his mid life crisis experience to practice celibacy. Late in the film he thinks he is being discovered by his x-wife who is sailing around the island on a ship with friends. He is deeply angered by this and creates a storm to over turn the ship. He created the tempest. A thought form manifested life. He wanted to destroy them and created a storm , but in the end they crashed on his doorstep or beach. Truly a lesson in giving too much attention to what you hate. They manifested his demonstration. Otherwise they may have sailed right by the island and completely missed him.

Lolita

Kubrick's tour de force of suggestion and implication, James Mason carries this psycho-sexual dark comedy in a brilliant performance as slightly mad writer Humbert Humbert clumsily involving himself in a widowed mother & teenage daughter, calmly taking advantage at every turn.  Shelley Winters is wonderful in maybe her best role, Sue Lyon scintillatingly sympathetic as the daughter, and Peter Sellers, well...   Second only to Strangelove and 2001 for definitive Kubrick, Lolita is a must for any film appreciator.
