[QUOTE=M27Barney]btw-TFK crew taking over another thread |
Although, to be honest, I've been a Dream Theater fan for like 7 years before I became a TFK fan. |
ah, okay, so it's the DT dudes who took over the TFK thread i'm at systematic chaos at this point. i was gonna start at the beginning, but i really like jordan rudess. i've liked everything so far...except some of the hot mastering. like tfk, it takes a while to get into some of their tunes for me...especially the really metal tunes. |
Start from the beginning, you won't regret! |
When Dream and Day Unite? Or do you mean the Majesty Demos?
At least get When Dream and Day Reunite with James on vocals. Awesome show. |
When Dream and Day Unite is the best 80s progressive metal album ever released. It is just recorded by a drunk monkey. |
I thought Operation: Mindcrime was the best 80s prog metal album? Even still, I'd take Perfect Symmetry over WDADU. The Charlie vocals kill it for me, not the songs themselves.

Don't forget Charlie Dominici and Derek Sherinian coming out to play with the band on Metropolis Part I. |
Yeah, that part is quite awesome. I hope there will be occasions like that even with moore and portnoy.

I recall Moore stating something about not wanting to do anything with Dream Theater again. The closest thing he did with DT was probably OSI's debut, which had Portnoy as a guest.

I consider drone metal to be progressive...

^ Honestly, I can't figure out why he acts like this. As far as I know, his departure from DT was caused by a musical divergence, not for some sort of fights within the members of the group, so I don't see any particular reason to avoid collaborations or one-night-reunions like the one they did with dominici and sherinian.

^ agreed. That would be just awkward. Also I gotta say that I love DT's WDADU just as much as the next prog head out there, but that album doesnt even come close to the sheer mastery of QUEENSRCHE's OPERATION MINDCRIME. that album is the best album of the entire 80's era. I mean DT were just starting out, but I stil say it's an absolutey solid debut album. On the other hand, QUEENSRCHE hit thier talent peak with MINDCRIME. They never did better than that album. That was it!!

Yes, Mindcrime is a masterpiece of 80s metal, but (like another user said) the other works are quite mediocre and I consider it the only Queensryche album that deserves multiple listens.

A Change Of Seasons has lost some magic over the past few years, I must say. I remember listening to that song, consistently throughout the whole 20 minute bus ride for like a whole month in grade 8 - This is when I was just getting into Dream Theater, and well I guess Prog too. This was my first time where I had heard something of that caliber in size and musicianship - I was just awed. Nowadays though, Six Degrees probably hold the candle. I really like the diversity in that song.
