As a gay man I thank you for your support. My first post on this website asked about gays in progressive rock, but from your OP I see this question was asked before my time here.

My impression that Prog Rock fans would be more open-minded than their "non-Prog-Rock" counterparts. I think this is proving true.

I've had that assumption too, considering that progressive rock kind of encourages intelligence to some degree, and I believe intelligence encourages equality. I could be wrong, but that's how I see it personally.


My assumption was based on what I perceived as "feminine" qualities of Prog Rock, like extended flute-solos or the overly theatrical clothing and staging of some of the concert performances. I think I remember Tony Banks referring to Wind and Wuthering as a "feminine" album.

Even Yes named one of their albums "Drama"!  HellllOOOooo! Wink

How about the Israeli band Sheshet? They made an excellent album back in the late '70s.

Yehudit Ravitz, their lead singer, has made a successful music career in her country, she declared helserf openly lesbian, is currently living with her partner and their two kids.

And she sings great, btw:

Well...there are certain areas where the term "progressive" overlaps with other musical forms.  Husker Du were pioneers in the Minneapolis sound of the day, as was Prince....they didn't use Mellotrons nor synth, but they charted some new musical territory.   Minneapolis was VERY into Fripp during the "Exposure" project, and his other pre-Discipline work as well.  

And I disagree about the "endless list"....the music biz is still very anti-gay, from what I'm told.  It's a dog-eat-dog corporate world, and the white guy suits who run it only love their money.  They have no real love for gays, unless they can start some kind of fad.  

I'm sure there are gay prog musicians who just stay on the down-low to protect their fan base and business relationships.  Sad but true.

Prince, like David Bowie or Brian Eno, is not actually an LGBT artist but one that either implied they were as part of their image or was assumed to be because of their sensibilities. In reality, Prince is a raging heterosexual and can't get enough of the ladies.

I don't think it's so much a matter of being in hiding but rather keeping their personal lives a personal matter.  Certainly sad that mainstream society makes it an issue. Unhappy
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Not prog but it's interesting that David Geffen, one of music's most powerful people, is openly gay and no one ever comments on it.

I'm not a gay, I never had homosexual desires and I never experimented with that, but I have nothing against LGBT population,  their subculture and that political movement, so don't take me wrong when I say that many of Progressive Rock albums, for example Genesis' ATTWT sounds pretty "gay" to me.

I think that we should care of an artist's sexual preferences only when they are reflected into his/her music and lyrics, otherwise who cares?

That's an interesting opinion. For example, although Michael Stipe came out I don't think of REM as a "gay" band because their songs have been mostly about politics and not love and sex.

Back in the early 1970's, the record company execs had identified "homo-erotic" acts as potential lures for new audiences (particularly young teen boys who wanted to p*ss their parents off!).   I remember all the suggestive articles about Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Marc Bolan etc. in industry rags like Circus, Creem etc.  

Case in point:  Mick Ronson & David Bowie, "Spiders from Mars" era -



Mercifully, prog seemed to have escaped this fate & made it on its own musical merits!
