I just played ADToE earlier today, I like it enough to have the vinyl version, even though they did a horrible job of mixing it for vinyl, it sounds lifeless.
I still skip tracks I just don't like.......But I listen to DT probably 4-5x a week.

Train of Thought, SDoIT and Scenes are still my favs.

For me that last album has the usual awesome DT music passages and solos, problem is they are inside some awful boring songs.

i hear what you're saying.  however, i'm the opposite.  i kind of loose attention in the middle of all the fast time change stuff.  it's when they get back to melody or memoable riffs, that i enjoy them.  if anything, they could practice a bit of restraint.  count of tuscany is a good example.  the intro had 4 awesome parts.  then comes the singing which loses me, until the chorus.  then i'm lost again with all the time changy stuff.  but, when petrucci does is floyd type solo, i'm all ears.  then that last acoustic part is awesome!  i guess, its about sitting through to get the good stuff :)

Haha, you got me there, I am DEFINITELY a fanboy.  But you know what?  I'm a fanboy of a lot of bands!  And Dream Theater is simply the best!  If you're gonna be a fanboy, be a fanboy of the best.  And even as a fanboy, I can admit there are weaknesses in some of their latest albums (not A Dramatic Turn of Events though, that album is amazing).  But I take them as they are.  I mean, take Systematic Chaos as an example - we were talking about it above, and yes, overall I admit that is a weak album.  But you know what, it's still better than 99.99999 % of albums that are available to the public because of In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 1 and 2.

Agreed with JJ, to me, they are only ok. I've said it before - i can only listen to them rarely and in small dosages.

Yes, we all know your feelings - how you think DT paints with one color on their palette.  You never replied to the youtube videos I posted, by the way - explain to me how that's a band with one color on their palette?  Why are you here in this thread?  LOL  This is the Dream Theater APPRECIATION thread, not the "let's talk about how I personally don't think they're worthy compared to this band and that  band and..." thread.

I'm sorry i never saw them. For some reason i can only use the quick login, so if i exit Chrome or anything like that it leaves a large gap for posts. I'll make sure to check it out though. Tongue

Dude, that's why I think Dream Theater is the best band out there - I mean, they change things up a bit every album, and different people like them for different reasons!  I personally think Train of Thought is their weakest album because they were trying to make a metal album, but some people got into them because of that album!

Well I listened to Black Clouds and Silver Linings and I don't like it. In my opinion, they are a VERY OVERRATED BAND.

despite our differences here, this is the most mature board i've ever been on.

dtguifan-i'm with you on the changes ect.  some of their most rewarding songs take a while to get into.  so, i'm sure i'll come to love the passages of songs that don't grab me.  luckily, these are not albums i burn out on.  they are constantly rewarding.  btw, i read your post about playing a DT song for your wife.  same thing happened to me!  we'll these girls to a DT show no matter whatWink

also, btw, been enjoying your posts.  have you heard the Flying Colors disc  yet?

Thanks man!

I'm sorry to say I wasn't that impressed with Flying Colors.  Unhappy  But I've got it, and maybe a few months down the road I'll give it another chance.  There's nothing...bad about it, it just didn't grab me, if you know what I mean.  And with the lineup, I was hoping for something...more.  So I haven't mastered the "no preconceptions" thing, I guess.  Wink

Then I loved Awake and A Change of Seasons, much less Falling Into Infinity, and with Metropolis Pt 2 they became again on my top and that stayed with Six Degrees.

After that it has been a bit of a mixed feeling, I have all their albums but none later than Six Degrees has really ticked all the right boxes. Possibly it is also because I lost a bit interest in prog-metal as such.

Anyway I respect them a lot and I still went to see them live in the Black Clouds tour, but they did not convince me anymore.

Hey, I understand where you're coming from, man.  I'm sorry they haven't kept your attention.  To me, they won me over before that, and because I was won over I stuck it out with them, and was able to take each album as it is and say "well, I absolutely LOVE these tracks, and even though I don't appreciate the other tracks on this album, just the fact that I LOVE these other tracks makes it a better album than a LOT of other ones in my collection."  I'm the same way with a lot of bands - take Rush for example.  I have all their albums, but I wish they were making albums like in the days of Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Hemispheres, etc.  But even though each album hasn't lived up to those, they still have plenty of tracks on each album they've made since that I love, so...yep, fanboy here.  But you know what, it's more fun to be a fanboy than dissatisfied all the time.  LOL

I really love DT too, it is among my favourite bands, with Pink Floyd and Yes. However, unlike the other two bands, there is no DT album that I would call a Masterpiece, that I can say I love from beginning to end, and that's a bit frustrating. However, there are always many songs on each album that I really love and wouldn't do without them, and that's why I have all of their albums. Now, a while ago I was checking how many minutes from each album I have on my Ipod, and I discovered that almost all of the albums are represented by at least 40 min of music, which means that if they had released vinyl long albums with just the songs that I liked, they would all be masterpieces in my mind.

Train of Thought is by far NOT their weakest album....and yes it is their most heaviest metal album but it is one of their best PROGRESSIVE METAL albums, and to me a top 5 PROG METAL album.

Sometimes the problem with a few is they simply cannot get past the "metal" tag. ToT has the classic DT musicianship, highly themed songs which are pretty good. We are not comparing them to Metallica, Anthrax or Megadeth.
Compared to SDoIT it is 2 different albums and also Scenes.....Octavarium gets them back to some symphonic prog metal. SC I also like quite a bit, I don't care for a couple songs but again, this album is more PROG METAL than symphonic as the previous album.
A lot of very bad prog metal started coming out and you have to be good enough to not mix all those up with Train of Thought and SC as well as "Nightmare..." from BC&SL......Which is pretty damn good.....IMO

Like Dog says .....ADToE has its moments, but some of the songs are tough to listen to all the way thru.....I find myself not paying attention and it becomes background music for me.

It just boggles my mind how crazy people get over them.

Maybe it's just because I'm not that big into them...but they are just straightforward, normal prog metal.
THE definitive prog metal band for sure, but musically I think there's far better.

Now if I was in my 30's and was a teen when I&W first came out, I'd probably think they're the greatest.
But for people my age, I get liking them...but why the god status? Even my favorite bands of all time have some weaker albums for example, but some DT fans give auto 5 star to everything. I can't help but think it's because they are like the name of prog metal. That's great but shouldn't grant em god tier.

OK I admit it's probably just because I'm not a huge fanLOL I do think for some that's accurate though (they are DT so you gotta love em)

I'd agree, since it's my favorite DT albumShocked

What's weird is I used to love Octavarium, now it's one of my least favorites.

I used to hate Systematic Chaos but now it's not bad.

I still do hate BC&SL but not as much as I used to (originally got 1 star from me!)
