Hehe, was expecting 8 pages of bloodshed, but there are no women to take part in it. |

I actually sort of agree with this, or at least I've had first-hand experience of this recently. The other week, I told my sister that she should listen to "My Room (Waiting for Wonderland)" By VDGG. The first thing she said was "I'll never be able to sing along to this". Not sure if this is quite the point you were making but still, maybe it's a factor? (The second thing she said was that it sounded like cheesy elevator music GRRRR)
Other than that, I personally don't know what it is about me that might set me apart from other females in my choice of music.

I agree, and had already posted something to this effect. That is exactly the reason why my wife likes "Follow You Follow Me" but when she went to see Genesis she was bored by the long instrumental breaks.

Interesting. I had my daughter take a look at this thread because I wanted her input. I also wanted her to see how ridiculous some of the replies were.
She also singled out WatcherOfTheSkies88's above referenced comments and said that may have something to do with it.
My sister loves prog. We went to many prog concerts long ago before the term prog existed. She is a musician. I've always felt that musicians of all people have a greater appreciation for this type of genre, due in large part to the structure and complexity of the music. Her favorite group was Gentle Giant. We saw them several times including an unforgettable performance at the Roxy on Sunset Blvd. in LA. My daughter has a greater love of classical music. Kind of goes against the vocal theory though, now doesn't it? My wife, well it's country music all the way. As a matter of fact, my sister is the only female in my entire family who really likes progressive rock. She is in no way into it as much as me though!

There are not zero women who like prog rock. Not at all.
As for it appealing more to men than women, you're absolutely correct.
Bullsh*t. You could have easily inverted that and said: Nico, Janis Joplin, Patti Smith, etc. Ricky Martin, Rick Astley, Jedward. Although I do think Rick Astley is pretty enjoyable myself once in a while.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU0wg5nupXM That's a beautiful song that anyone from any demographic should be able to appreciate. I used to listen to Soft Machine and Hatfield and the North when I was with my ex-girlfriend. She didn't like Third very much. Edited by Hoodlum - April 30 2010 at 09:28 |

In 1978 a girl introduced me to the music of Happy The Man. It was strange to see her judged by other female friends. When she would play the music of Happy The Man, her girlfriends would cringe with embarrassment. I also knew a girl that was obsessed with the early King Crimson. She made life uncomfortable for the other girls in our band by playing early Crimson recordings during our transport to gigs. My first wife who was a Gong fanatic, experienced turmoil with female friends who may have thought that due to her personal musical tastes, Ancora Psychiatric Hospital would have been her suitable place to reside.
All 3 were fans of Progressive rock and were not musicians. I was good friends with a female keyboardist that spent most of her day learning Keith Emerson pieces....and yet another girl who worked feverishly on string arrangements and her main instrument was Cello. Both girls were rejected by most of society as we travelled on the road for many years. It would seem that women who have an interest in Prog, have a tough time getting excepted and have more confrontations than a criminal has with the law. They were always off on their own because of that realization and there was no doubt, that the music they loved and respected was considered to be like a disease for many.

My wife has for some unknown reason been humming TMV's Since We've Been Wrong all day. I take this as a positive thing.

My fiancée loves prog shows. Why? No lines in the womens restrooms.
Actually she likes a variety of prog music but her favorites are Genesis, IZZ, Kansas, ELP, Helmet of Gnats, LTE, Cryptic Vision and a few others. Not into metal of any kind and also not a big Yes or Rush fan as she does not like the alto vocals of Jon Anderson except for Relayer and well, I will be nice and not repeat what she says about Geddy Lee's voice. I don't know I think there are women who would be open to prog because quite a few listen to classical. it is also involvement on the listeners end to get into the music. It is why so many musicians favor it or people who have had some kind of experience playing or learning music. Most people don't have a clue to the technical aspects of what make a great passage of prog and so it sounds boring to them .This is not limited to women.

I introduced one of my friends here at school to Magma (I know, taking a big chance of alienation ), and she enjoyed them well enough.

I just had to say something. Having the same IP doesn't mean the traffic originated from the same machine. Just means they came from the same gateway! I agree this was probably a case of a doppelganger, but I don't want to get banned if my roomie behind the same router joins!

Where there's a rule, there is often going to be an exception, but men seem generally more inclined to take music 'seriously' This is tricky to articulate without sounding like a mysoginist, but please bear with me..
In general terms, it often seems more important to a male music fan, how good a musician is on technical level. Women tend to like something if it simply appeals to their ears in some way. Men are natrually more inclined to be 'nerdy' and into collecting things and being an 'expert' on something which arguably doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things; a favourite band, film director, a football team etc Exploring prog through a forum like this, is sometimes like one long game of Top Trumps. Who's the best drummer? Who's the best shredder? Who had the best beard?? I've noted that our female members are less inclined to be part of these discussions. It's a boys will be boys thing imo. Who's got the biggest Yes collection etc? Women dont really seem to give a sh*t about such things. Why women seem to like prog less than men is simple, the men who play prog rock, and the men who listen to prog rock, seem more interested in prog rock, than they do in women... |

For local networks, routers enforce NAT (network address translation), so your lan IP is secure. It also helps your ISP in that they don't have to give each machine on your lan a separate IP. For instance, if you post any where in the residence halls on my uni's campus, it'll look like it's coming from 1 of 3 IP addrs, which one it is depends on the load of each device. Basically, I'm just saying that red-flagging ppl whose posts come from IP is not necessarily a good practice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAT |

A lot more went into that person being banned than just matching ip numbers. It was pretty obvious something very fishy was going on, I knew there was a double personality going on there, matching ips and matching email addresses were the icing on the cake. |
