I think we should all realize Gene will be Gene, but to be honest he really should lay low on modern bands. Times have changed, and for progressive bands especially, the live shows tend to be a bit more tame. I kinda like Kiss, as they were a gateway band to heavier things, and ultimately, prog for me, but Gene should stick in his own territory and leave Radiohead and bands of the sort alone. Not to say Radiohead is the most exciting band, but whats it to him? |
Way to say exactly what everyone else said a month ago. Bravo n00b.

To paraphrase a far more talented and visually entertaining musician.....
"Close your mouth and take your seat,
Cause after all you're just talking meat.
And music....
Well it's just entertainment folks"
Listen to Gene's legendary interview on NPR, that's Gene being Gene.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Well to continue the film analogy Kiss were the Rocky Horror Show, whilst Radiohead are more Death in Venice. Take yer pick. Ive seen both films and both bands. Kiss were fun but id forgotten the gig a week later whilst Radiohead made my spine tingle for months afterwards! There's more to music than a bit of slap and some pantomime choreography!

Must every thread on this forum be some progressive elitist whining about something?

I just saw Gene's basement and it's full of Radiohead CDs No mention yet, that the guy likes them comes as a shock . You would think that the public image of Gene (and many other hard rockers for that matter) is that their tastes are quite crude rude and limited to caveman IQ preferences. Heck Philty Animal Taylor loves Sade and once drunkenly accosted a look-alike in a restaurent !!! I love Motorhead, but none of their live DVDs do anything for me. IF you're not going to move, and you're just going to play your tunes as they are on the album, I'll see ya in the clubs where I can have a beer and get down with you. A hall, arena, or stadium requires a bit more than just standing there. A very select few have either the charisma, stage presence , and yes, the music, that will suffice to carry a show by themselves or itself. And yes, this does not apply to every band or fan equally. You may love Radiohead's shows. But some other R fans' may find them lacking for whatever reason, the same as I feel about Mo-head's arena shows.

Kiss scrape the bottom of any progressive rock barrel hence the need for the dress up like Halloween gimmick. Kudos to their perseverance but I could care less what Gene psuedo musician/actor/self proclaimed porn star Simmons has to say about the artistic integrity of Radiohead.

Er, I think the thread is about Gene not caring for Radiohead's concert "presentation". You may have missed the part about him liking their music. Pseudo means you're not really that which you claim to be. Gene plays bass and guitar (no claim to virtuosity, just competency) which means he is a musician, a paid one at that. Has acted in a few movies, therefore is an actor, again having been paid for that "job". And as for the porn star bit, well Wilt Chamberlain and others have claimed some success in that area. Ego is not something that will cause a person to hide that "fact". Are you jealous ?

I think Gene Simmons has done very well for himself, however, Kiss' music has never really changed (except for some more metal tendencies here and there), so I wouldn't consider him an authority on the "value of musical risk or experimentation". Kiss has always relied on a live spectacle, so, no surprises. Like most of the things he says, it's not really about Radiohead (who apparently can't put on the fire breathing spectacle), it's more about Kiss ("I mean, look at us! We're Kiss! We give the people what they want"!)
It's a shallow, predictable and manipulative statement from a member of a band who are artists at focusing the attention on themselves. Kiss won't be remembered for their music. They will be remembered for their shows. Radiohead is not Kiss, and Kiss is not Radiohead.

You mean radio stations keep playing Rock n Roll All Nite 'cause Kiss tours a few cities every few years ? Could the same be said for Pink Floyd's spectacular concerts ? That they will be remembered for their shows rather than their music ? Kiss has been around for 24 years. They had their first platinum album in '75. They still manage to go out on massive tours, and their back catalogue still sells in quite nice amounts, thank you. As for being remembered for one or the other, a concert is a one night thing held in memory. More than a few bands have tried the "Big Bang Show" to generate ticket sales, and failed because the music wasn't there. Will Kiss' music still be remembered or played in a hundred years from now ? Neither of us can prove it either way. But you can't deny that their songs are still getting played. Just not for your pleasure (or displeasure as it seems, although to your seeming displeasure). Kiss' success does not have any effect on Radiohead's nor vice versa. And comparing either's music or concert presentation doesn't prove anything. A Kiss show is a Kiss show. A Radiohead show is a Radiohead show. It is possible to like one over the other and still like the music that both have put out. Just not for you.

Which brings us back to the original deal, which is that Gene Simmons is not an authority on anything and should probably remain silent unless he is speaking about something with which he has some knowledge.

A few of the comments on this page are getting rather personal and disrespectful to others.

All I'm saying is, Kiss is a show band. The amount of units they have sold has nothing to do with their knowledge of composition and/or music in general (Spice Girls sold a lot of units too). Radiohead is in it for entirely different reasons. So I guess we agree with each other on that point.
As far as Pink Floyd, my feeling is that they will be remembered for both their shows and their music.
