It's quite unlike anything else in my collection but I found myself warming to it after a few listens and deffinitely a band I want to check out further. I've been trying to get hold of Kobaia but no luck yet.

Old topic, but while searching came up with this topic. I didn't want to start a new topic for this (sorry for bumping a deliberate troll/ prank thread to do it).

I was looking at Seventh Records and saw that Magma released a reworking of Rïah Sahïltaahk.

RÏAH SAHÏLTAAHK is the name of the Kobaïan who left after all the others, despite their disapproval. He thought he was better than anyone else and he was sure he could convert Kobaïa’s enemies to the Kobaïan spirit. But he failed and left alone for Kobaïa.

On the symbolic stop-over planet, Malaria, he has to face the raging elements he thinks he can dominate. With his ship almost sunk, he ends up begging them… to no avail. He will disappear. Drowned, swept away by the frenzied elements.

After the noise… silence.

At dawn, only a finally calmed remains, enlightened by the soft beams of the sun in this new day.

Zëbëhn Straïn dëh Geustaah

The original version of RÏAH SAHÏLTAAHK was recorded in 1971 and appears on the album 1001°C. At the time, Christian Vander, the composer, wasn’t satisfied with the arrangement written by the band. This new version is completely revamped and adapted to the current ensemble and its lyrical voices, it is truer to the spirit of MAGMA’s music and its unique sound!

Side A

Watseï Kobaïa (4:41)
Di Mahntër Sahïltaahk (3:00)
Süri Sï Toïdo (3:31)
Ün Zoïn Glaö (3:11)

Side B

Ïss Walomëhn Dëm (2:25)
Bradïa Ëtnah (2:24)
Mem Loïlë (3:46)
Wöleï (1:29)

Stella VANDER : voice
Isabelle FEUILLEBOIS : voice
Hervé AKNIN : voice
Benoît ALZIARY : vibraphone
James MAC GAW : guitar
Jérémie TERNOY : piano
Philippe BUSSONNET : bass
Christian VANDER : drums, voice, piano

Recorded and mixed between september 2013 and june2014 at UZ Studio by Francis LINON
Mastering : Southestern lab. Fierce Mountain, NC
Sleeve design by Gérald Nimal at Uniweriz Zekt Graf

I decided to add the album to PA as an EP, and while looking for more information, I came across it in a streaming version.

I guess it's being released on vinyl? I plan to buy it.

On Magma's page I see that the EP had already been added to the Compilations section, and has two reviews. Maybe you should delete your listing and move the original listing to the EP section?

Kohntarkosz is the only one I  have...and on vinyl. Never really 'got' what they were doing but I know there's a lot of love for these guys here at PA.
So what's the absolute must have album by these guys to cement one's understanding and liking of their music....?

I got into them via MDK and to this day its my favorite of theirs. But a lot of people have found that to be a less than stellar entry point, while being a stellar album. Chronologically seems the way to go.

I think Kobaia is the best place,  more traditional if you will.. an incremental one foot into the water step into he world of Magma.  With MDK HT you jumped in with both feet. Kobaia is a great album period, with the emphasis on some stellar playing and touches of the upcoming Magma Insanity (Stoah! Heart hahah).  MDK is a great Magma album, but it shows more the Orff side of the group and a STRONG influence on the vocals, but perhaps not of the tastes of everyone.  I would say Kobaia.  I liken it to some albums some groups have, if you don't like x don't even bother but you won't like the group. I think Kobaia is that for Magma.

I got into them with MDK too. But I think I tend to get into a band more easily at their weirdest.

true but if suggesting albums and groups to people you don't know or not knowing their tastes or predispositions, one should work their way up to it. Obviously not everyone is predisposed to that. It would be one thing if Kobaia was a sh*t album but it is FAR from that. It is a classic album but not the distinctive one that MDK was.

Kobaia has incredible emotional depth and beauty, furious playing, and good amounts of trademark Magma vocal wackiness. LOLClap The emphasis on the music, the playing, makes it an album most music fans, prog fans can love. If one doesn't have it, they need to have it. It is an album a NON Magma fan could love. Thus my point about being the starting point, if that didn't click, likely MDK would not. However with MDK, unless a listener like you knows they want the far out or non traditional stuff, it is best IMO to work ones way up to it.  In it is less musically driven and more choiral style showing the obvious Orff influence.

^Much agreed which is why I had already suggested going through their discography chronologically (i.e. starting with Kobaia).

hmmm.. I don't think it was me HT. I like MDK, respect it, but I have always been a huge fan of Kobaia and have also always felt it was the best point of entry into Magma. I frickin adore that album. Heart

Speaking of which, seems like I'm due for a Magma marathon.
