Yeah, probably. There's just so much stuff out there. You could well make the point that I've been unwittingly soaking in it a little.

Unwittingly, or sub-conciously?

I'm disappointed - neither of these players are avant-garde!

Yeah, I'm still a little surprised at how well In Absentia clicked with me, but maybe not so much for being an old Crimson fan.

when you hear projectile vomiting.... you'll know I've reached Moonchild
|
Moonchild is one of my favourite songs on that album as it sums up
that whole "not knowing what's going to happen next" feeling - the way
the tones just hang there, suspended, like moonbeams, as ghostly coils
of sound drift past, painting opaque and dark-blue imagery of
clouds obscuring the view temporarily as you watch, hypnotised...
Man, I feel a review coming on... |
you know Mark...I have to say this... spend the whole damned day in
front of the computer. Needed an R&R day from work.
Put itchycock in the player this morning and it stayed there and
has during the day been rotated into play. On about my fifth
listen of Moonchild since this morning. I have to say that
one of my great long held canons of prog rock.. that
listening to Moonchild causes uncontrolled bleeding from the
ears is slowly beginging to crumble. It is still a
meandering ...pointless piece of music. But it isn't any worse
than the Celine Dion my ex-wife used to subject upon me. For a
long time.. I would have rather listened to her than to been
subjected to the aural torture of Moonchild. Then again... maybe
I'm just tired and need to go to bed and will regret this post in the
morning hahhaha. Look forward to that review

I'm trying to delve deeper into this genre (At a slow pace though ;P). Anyone have suggestions? I only have a few picky requirements ;)
1. An alternative kind of sound (Tool, Rishloo, Radiohead) - I'm not that much of a fan of the straight tripleted 16th note riffs on one note at 180bpm that a lot of metal bands seem to like. I suppose what I like is the less metal or maybe softer metal. 2. No "death" vocals
Maybe Tool is the only prog metal band like this?

No, Tool is definitely not the only one.

Every sub-genre has both positive and negative sides and in my collection I have music from nearly all of the sub-genres (except Zeuhl which I haven't explored yet). I think it is important to listen to many examples of a particular kind of music before making a judgement on it - one may well be pleasantly surprised! Personally, I tend to focus mainly on Crossover, folk and symphonic prog but I also include Dream Theater and Blind Guardian in my favourite band list

First, a note to anekglagard -- try Sieges Even's The At of Navigating By The Stars. Or Pain of Salvation's Remedy Lane and Perfect Element Part 1 albums. Or Ayreon's Into The Electric Castle or even maybe The Human Equation (which I didn't think was that great, but lots of prog fans seem to like it). And I can't see how you've missed Riverside in all this (especially their first album).

A funny note about this: I never talk about Zeuhl because I don't like Zeuhl or really even consider it prog. I one day went through every sample on the zeuhl section (all 20 of them -- well, each one until I couldn't stand it and moved on, as I did in some cases) just becase I wanted to see if I couldn't find anything. But some of you might notice that this is probably the first time I've posted about Zeuhl. It's not worth debating, and I'm certainly not going to take the time to go back and analyse all of it -- aside from some Ruins tracks, it would be pure torture. I could be wrong about Zeuhl. But that won't make me enjoy it, ever. So I just ignore it. Problem solved. And I wonder if these people who complain about prog metal would ever think do the same. Oh, and I don't consider Blind Guardian prog either. And I'm never going to stop giving Mike a hard time about it.

not to stoke his frickin ego
but I always put a great deal of stock in Mark's opinions. I guess I
did put aside some of my learned bias and just listened to it with
fresh ears. Listened to it a couple more times last night (still in the
changer) Granted it will never be my favorite on that album...
but some of the revulsion .. in fact a large part has sort of faded
away to nothingness. Hell I remember I thought The Anicent off of
TFTO was a complete pile of sh*t from the first listen .. yet
over the years it did finally 'click' . That is what sets us. .as
prog listeners apart from others though. In general ast
least. We do have fairly open minds with regards to music.
anyhow.. just an aside . and I'll get back on topic.
