You mean despite his writing a vegetarian bible?:

Next: Ted Nugent & feminism, a cuddly guide...

This might be slightly off topic ... but do they really eat bear in the US? AFAIK predators don't make for healthy food because they're at the top of the food chain and accumulate environmental poisons in their body.

I think we accumulate environmental poisons just by breathing & living ion today's suburban world. Therefore, that is the least of my concerns when I cut into a medium grilled 1 inch thick rib steak.

The problem is that the higher an animal is on the food chain the more poisons does it accumulate during its life. A rabbit eats plants and accumulates poisons, a wolf might eat rabbits and thus accumulate much more of the poison.

So you're saying that as the kings of the food chain, we accumulate more poisons ? It seems fair, we're likely more responsible for putting it out there, gas emissions, sewerage, hormones & pesticides in food, Singer-songwriter albums etc ....

"So you're saying that as the kings of the food chain, we accumulate more poisons"

What I'm trying to say is that the longer your food chain is, the more poison can accumulate. It also depends on the environment of course ... if there's no poison to begin with there's nothing that could accumulate. But usually there's always lead or cadmium etc., and the concentration increases with each step of the food chain. Obviously vegetarians are at an advantage here, since their food chain only has one step ... Wink

Yes your absolutely right, a lot of top carnivores in the wild have extremely high concentrations of toxins. Especially in large areas with a lot of pollution. For example the Monteray Bay killer whales have extremely high levels of toxins in their bodies, and if it increases a bit more they could die. That's also how DDT (a pesticide) ends up killing birds of prey. It accumulates as it goes up the food chain because it doesn't break down in the body. In us it causes liver damage, lack of fertility and some other things I can't remember. It's called bioaccumulation and thats why DDT pesticide is banned in most countries, although we still sell them to many developing countries Angry

I just revised this a couple of days ago for my A2 biology exam Tongue.

If you're a canadian hockey fanatic, is it O.K. to kill a duck ,like say one from Anaheim ? Wink
P.S. You know that ad cliche where a sports champ declares after winning the championship , that he's going to Disney World ? I wonder if any Ducks are going to Disney Land to celebrate LOL

Strange how his seriousness re : the environment is often overlooked. Also the intensity of his belief in the "sacredness" of life. He doesn't hunt just for the sport of it. He is serious about respecting the prey that he feeds on. Unlike most of us that have our meat pre-cut & sometimes shrink wrapped, he knows what is involved and knows the whole deal. He also is spot on when it comes to awareness as to the degradation of the wild. As a hunter he sees first hand man's shirking of any responsability or even knowledge of the effects of our actions. As I have a few of my friends who are hunters, I know that this "pro" environmental attitude is not rare. They even defend the actions of animals like coyotes & bears whose terrain has been overtaken by suburbs & the like because they understand the cause & reason for it. If I occupy your backyard, what are the chances that you might not react favourably to me ?

Isn't the main reason we don't eat bears is because since they are top carnivores, the energy from plants is mostly lost by the time it gets to them.  I don't know about poison, but I don't think bears are very nutritious.
