I'm in need of a new band, and I'm guessing Do Make Say Think is worth checking out. I'm downloading "Frederica" off of Southern Records' website, see how I like them. Hopefully this'll be a start of a new friendship.

Meddler: I only have Sings Reign Rebuilder and the album clicked for me after months of not listening to it. I didn't really liked their sound that much. Too random or not anything at all going on, but I stopped listening to it, gave it some time and after 2-3 months I went and listen to the album again, but this time at night and I loved it. Most of the albums I own that are in the same vein as Set Fire to Flames are always easier for me to appreciate them while I'm in my bed and trying to sleep. I have a more surreal experience with them (that's why I'm listening to Kid A a lot lately ). Maybe you can try it and see if it works for you or at least try to listen to it while in complete darkness or something like that. Freak: Fredericia is a great track! I love the drumming in that song and the trumpets as well. It's a very energetic track and one of my favorite from them. My bet is on you liking it.

I think I'll listen and try out Do Make Say Think because I already have an album by the other 2 bands... but I've heard so much about A Silver Mt. Zion's debut...
I guess I'll decide when I get there.

Tough choice... hmm... I really love ASMZ, and would probably have gone for that one, had I been in your place... and get DMST later on...

Perdition City worth listening to? I'm working it *right* now. First track is GREAT. Sings Reign Rebuilder was a great album... Telegraphs in Negative/Mouth Trapped in Static was just as good on first listens. After more listens gonnna find out which one I like more. I really like what Ive heard from them so far.

Do Make Say Think were quite good! A completely different sound than their fellow Canadian post-rock labelmates Godspeed - and I was somewhat expecting a rehash. DSMT's sound seems a lot more raw and real, that driving bass on "Fredericia" was when I realized they were were in a whole different world than Godspeed. Come Christmas time, I think I'll go hunting for this.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned but it appears that Set Fire To Flames' record company has streamable full-albums up on their website.
Sings Reign Rebuilder
Telegraphs In Negative / Mouths Trapped In Static
Nifty, I may be buying that first album.

Great! How did it go?
Thanks for the links, Freak. People who are interested in the band might want to listen to the samples in that site and read their very interesting and strange bio.

I love this album! It's very jazzy, uplifting, and somewhat unpredictable.
Looks like I still have yet to come across a bad post rock album!

It sure is. I have their recent album, L'univers, and it's a great album. and since I like to copy other people's review, here's one from http://www.adequacy.net/review.php?reviewID=7291 |
L'Univers |
The Simpsons
have ruined my life. I’m sure they’ve ruined a lot of people’s lives
but thanks to Bleeding Gums Murphy, I can’t think of the word “jazz”
without thinking of that walk-on role he had on The Cosby Show.
(Can cartoons have “walk-on” roles? Can they have “walk-on” roles on a
cartoon version of a real show? Why does it sound strange to call The Simpsons
a cartoon?) Any time that word “jazz” comes to mind, I instantly think
of the Bill Cosby character introducing Bleeding Gums to his family as
a great “jh-aaaaz musician.” And so now, that’s how my brain hears it:
“jh-aaaaz.” What does this have to do with anything? Hell if I know. Maybe
I got started on all this after looking 12twelve up on Allmusic.com.
They categorize 12twelve as rock and that just doesn’t seem to make
sense to me. Just because they’re a 4 piece and one of those pieces
plays the sax-a-ma-phone doesn’t make it jazz. But the fact that the
other 3 play guitar, bass, and drums doesn’t make it “rock” either. And
it sure as hell ain’t “post rock.” But wait, Jens Neumaier is also
credited as playing keyboards and effects in addition to sax. And L’Univers,
their third album, was produced by Steve Albini, so it’s gotta be post
rock, right?? Not at all. When I listen to something as interesting as
this, I think “jh-aaaaz.” L’Univers fits this
category in every way. The tempos swing, the drumming is loose, bass
bobs around, horns and effects skitter in and out, and at root, the
entire product is strictly jazz. In the same way you can consider the
early Meat Puppets punk. It’s the attitude, the meaning behind it,
which makes it what it is. The most incredible thing
about the album is the production. This pretty much goes without saying
when Steve Albini is involved. He says he doesn’t produce albums, that
he records them. Well, this is certainly one case where it sounds just
like that; there isn’t the big room-y sound you’ve come to expect from
him. There is more attention paid to where each sound is placed. The
electronic effects dart in and out of your ears and the drums rumble
all over the place. (Be sure to listen to this in the car. In some
places the drums start moving around down by your feet.) If this whole
rock n’ roll thing fails to take off, Albini could make a good career
out of recording jazz musicians. His work on this album leads me to
wonder how Coltrane’s later works would have sounded under similar
direction. Guitarist Jaume Pantaleon easily crafts
memorable melodies through both chord progressions and individual notes
that work extremely well in conjunction with Neumaier’s sax. Together
they create varying atmospheres from song to song. Pantaleon uses a
wide variety of effects to move from moody droning to more accessible
pieces. All the while the rhythm section keeps it in one piece,
supporting the two musicians while they break into new ground. Among
the 16 tracks, there are a few that consist of nothing more than noise
breaks and electronic blips and horn bleats. If several songs were
extended using these tracks as sections, the album would work better as
a whole. Thankfully they are short enough that they don’t weigh the
work down. Delving into the realm of jazz can be a
pretty intimidating thing. What is it that makes Coltrane & Ornette
& Sonny great? There are tones and textures and moods and flavors,
scales and runs and fills, not to mention time signatures and hundreds
of other things that are all discussed within the first few pages of a Down Beat magazine. L’Univers
seems to make all this a lot easier to comprehend. It makes sense to
both the indie rock doofus (c’mon, you know you have no idea why all
that noise on Ascension is good), and to the hip cats. It’s an
album you will actually keep coming back to because you thoroughly
enjoy it and it sounds good. It may not be as good as Sax On The Beach but it costs less than 500 bucks and you won’t have to swallow a Krusty Brand jagged edge to buy it. |

Great Chamberry! now im deffinitely going to have to get an album of theirs My newest favorite is Perdition City by Ulver, I was really surprised how it was. It's so different than some other post-rock I've heard, I guess. I don't know for sure. Now I'm listening to Happy Songs for Happy People, Mogwai.
