For me the best Gong are actually on Shamal and Gazeuse!, which came after You. So that's another thing worth checking out (I also like the later Pierre Moerlen's Gong work a lot but I do understand why people are not directed there first). These go more in a jazzy direction than the earlier stuff, if that's your cup of tea. Apart from that I have to say that You could never excite me that much, also compared to Angel's Egg and the earlier material, which I think is more fun.

The best Gong album isnt even a Gong album anyways
...even if it technically is. Take it away Dashiell: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j6YBfvPTdMU Always puzzled by the amount of Gong fans, Teapot heads alike, that have never heard Obsolete. |

Holiday Greetings! I first heard the LP by Gong, "Expresso," and was blown away by Allan Holdsworth (that was the first time I'd ever heard him play, long before UK etc.). I also recommend Gong "You" as others have said...I was very fortunate to have seen Gong, featuring Daevid Allen and Blombdido, playing in a small club in Chicago on two consecutive nights!! Their live "Master Builder" was drop-dead amazing!! You may also wish to seek out some Steve Hillage solo work, try his seminal LP "Fish Rising." It has some amazing moments! Happy Listening!

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

I just listened to Magick Brother all the way through. I really liked it, it's an album I can see myself returning to a lot. It was a bit inconsistent but when it's good it's GOOD. Wow, I just didn't expect this at all. Gong.. who knew? My newest obsession for sure. This hasn't happened for me with a new band in a long time. Anyway thank you all for your suggestions and Holiday Greetings to you too cstack! And to all of you as well. Gong... who knew.

I think I may have posted this already but I only have one Spock's Beard - Gluttons For Punishment and one Flower Kings album - Stardust We Are. I've been told I should check out their newest one so you never know I could change my mind. My first Flower Kings song was their cover of Cinema Show on A Fox Lies Down: A Tribute To Genesis. They are OK but I didn't see the need to explore any further. I almost got two Swans albums but stopped with To Be Kind, which I consider good music to slit your wrists to. I only have a few Beefheart ablums but I can't get into Trout Mask Replica. I cringe whenever it comes up in my rotation. Love Doc At The Radar Station and Safe As Milk though.
On a side note Fox has an excellent version of In The Beginning by Mother Gong.

None. I like all prog. Ok, I'm not a super huge fan of prog metal. I like some of it but I'm picky. Then again to me it's not really prog but more like metal so maybe it doesn't really count.

I listened to Camembert Electrique all the way through. I enjoyed it, definitely a good album but... I don't know maybe my expectations are too sky high now with this band. I didn't like it as much as the other 4 that I've listened to so far. I kept waiting for it to 'WOW' me and it didn't it was just 'good.' Maybe on repeated listens I'll like it better, who knows. Can you recommend an album from them for me to listen to next?

Just listened to Shamal all the way through. I liked it. You were right, it sounds a lot different. I really liked Cat in Clark's Shoes. and the rest of the album's good too. Gong back on track for me here.

Hi, have you listen to 'The Whirlwind' yet? Dellinger on here strongly recommended it to me one time, and so I listened to it and I really liked it! I think you would like it too.

The only one I've not heard by Transatlantic is "Kaleidoscope". I have the first two albums. Not overly fond of vocals and too much of the music seems like cookie-cutter prog to me. I know I'm in the minority but what the hell. I have 3,400+ other CDs to listen to so I'm not going to worry.

^ Yeah I definitely wouldn't. There's tons of newer acts that I don't listen to at all and I'm not sweatin it lol. It sounds like you gave them an honest try and they're just not for you, for the reasons that you stated.. which are very valid ones I would say.

Porcupine Tree.
I only have two of their albums, but they are the two most highly rated PT albums on PA each with a rating of 4.25 and each with around 2500 ratings: In Absentia and Fear Of A Blank Planet. Just doesn't do it for me, but I'll give 'em another chance someday. I've experienced not liking a certain CD/artist and then years later giving it a try and having a comepletely different experience, so my mind is open.
