"He was sitting in the park one Sunday evening
Around about five
When along came a lady, a total stranger
Wanted young Jimmy to go with her
Poor Jimmy Wilson, poor Jimmy Wilson
Well she was so persuasive and seemed quite friendly
So he went along
And the lady who was lonely gave him tea
And she was his friend for ever after
Poor Jimmy Wilson, poor Jimmy Wilson"

Strawbs experts - Am I wrong to read a sinister meaning to these lyrics? Is Jimmy still locked in a cellar somewhere in Hertfordshire, or is there a shallow grave in Epping Forest? Or is he just friends with the old lady and does the weekly shopping to this day?

Can you tell me where my country lies,
said the unifaun to his true loves eyes.
It lies with me, cried the queen of maybe,
for her merchandise he traded in his prize.

By the way, what is a unifaun?

More of a Peter Gabriel-ism than anything. I think "unifaun" is a made up word from the song, since I've never seen or heard it anywhere else, but a faun is a mythological half-man, half-goat creature, like a satyr:

Presumably a "unifaun" would just be one of these but with a horn coming out of its forehead like a unicorn?

Of course I already know what a faun is. But a unifaun... well, as you said, Gabriel invented it. I guess I'll want to picture a faun, but instead of having goat characteristics, with unicorn characteristics... I can imagine it would be a very fair mythological or fantastical being.

My honest assumption is Peter was creating a portmanteau of "uniform" (as in soldier/guard/government etc.) and "faun", like the above. It's also Peter Gabriel, so I could be WAY off.

^ Well, I can try to picture or imagine a combination of unicorn and faun. But not of uniform and faun. So I guess I'll stick to the unicorn and faun option.

You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last
But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast
Yonder stands your orphan with his gun
Crying like a fire in the sun
Look out the saints are comin' through
And it's all over now, baby blue
The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense
Take what you have gathered from coincidence
The empty-handed painter from your streets
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets
This sky, too, is folding under you
And it's all over now, baby blue

Hmm...she gave him tea. And some sweats afterwards? Wink

''There once was a tiny, very naughty little boy -
With a dirty face
His Mummy taught him to be clean and tidy and kept him in his place
Father was a man of culture. God was in the sky ready to give chase
There once was a tiny, very naughty little boy, who grew into a youth
The Mum and Daddy read the daily horror the bible was the only truth
They groomed him for the battlefield of living in a world of abuse
Once upon a time there was a little being kicked out into a seething world
The lies that dear old Mum and Dad so innocently fed him with were all unfurled
In ignorance he grew to hate the lot he had inherited at birth.

Look at the literature under his arm, he is doing his best to impress you
Man of the world and his own daydream hero he desperately tries to convert you
But his thoughts they are changing - and as he looks at himself
He looks at himself

Oh where am I going and what am I doing? My head is so big and so weary
It's no good me trying to be all the things that I'm not I'm me and I'm me only
And I've been so greedy, I've always wanted to be
And never just been.
Not much room for a selfish thought and yet knowing just that, it becomes one.
Not much room for conceit - yet knowing that knowing that is conceited
What I am saying now exists not as words but only as feeling.

Have you ever been absolutely liberated just opening your eyes?
Has it ever occurred to your searching senses that nothing is disguised?
Have you ever had the feeling that the only thing you're living is your life?
Have you ever had the feeling that the only thing you're made of is your life?
Have you ever had the feeling that the only thing you're made by is your life?

Aye lad, but I knew you had it in you.''

Here we are again, the start of the end,
But there's More
I only want to see if you'll give up on me
But there's always More
There is More, International Feel
And there's More, Interplanetary Deals
But there's More, Interstellar Appeal
Still there's More, Universal Ideal
Still there's More, International Feel
I swear something lies
In your ears and your eyes
'Cause there's More
You hear and you see yet you do not believe
That there's always More
(I know)

^ God bless, Roy Harper! I'll never forget when he and Ginger Baker had a fight, because Roy wouldn't come off the stage for him at Glastonbury in 1980 (I think?)

Ha Ha I remember that (I was there so its surprising I can remember it!) it was 1981.. Roy and his band were on before Ginger Baker's new band (just after getting kicked out of Hawkwind.. who were actually headlining the next night) and Ginger thought that Roy was running over into his slot and so sent his roadies in to unplug Roy' gear and then the scrap between roadies mostly) ensued.. Ginger got a half-brick (or something) in the face and played the set with blood running down his face.. not very 'Love & Peace Man' but he was  totally out of order as the whole day's running order was messed up (as these things always were at those events back then) but he thought he was the superstar and everyone must bow to him. Roy only had a very short set if I remember and Michael Eavis invited him back in 82 to do a set to make up for the fiasco! GB's band were S**t being made up mostly of a novelty duo called 'Trimmer & Jenkins' who had been in the pub rock band Burlesque.

Bizarrely, it was Ginger Baker who hit me in the face/head with a drumstick when he was drummer with Hawkwind and I was an 17 year old stage hand.. I cant use the word i'd describe him as but the current minister for health's surname rhymes with it..Wink

That was a great festival, Roy, Hawkwind, Mother Gong, the first live appearance of New order (which was just lots of dry ice and green lights, that's all I can remember!), Chicken Shack, Robert Hunter, Gordon giltrap band, Judie Tzuke,....Big smileClap

^^ Great reminiscences, Cosmiclawnmower! It was 1981, now I remembered (just!) I reckon there could be a book in you somewhere.

He's a real nowhere man
Sitting in his nowhere land
Making all his nowhere plans for nobody

Doesn't have a point of view
Knows not where he's going to
Isn't he a bit like you and me?

Nowhere man please listen
You don't know what you're missing
Nowhere man, The world is at your command

He's as blind as he can be
Just sees what he wants to see
Nowhere man, can you see me at all

Nowhere man don't worry
Take your time, don't hurry
Leave it all till somebody else
Lends you a hand
“Living in their pools, they soon forget about the sea.”

Ooaasiiwuudadadadiiwasammadiidewai ohehehawwasammaa wu-uu!

Listened to some Magma while jogging and now the chorus of Blum Tendiwa is stuck in my head. That's the best translitteration I can do. I guess one could actually even look up the lyrics, but my live cd box doesn't have them.
