Slint is given far too much weight in terms of influence in the genre..  Mathrock comes from the ground, from small clubs and dirty little cellars throughout the U.S.   'Spiderland' simply didn't demonstrate this, and their impact should not be overestimated.  I don't care what anyone says and though the Mathrock definition here mentions them (I helped write it along with Chamberry), it was more an effort to cite albums seen as influential on Mathrock, but that doesn't mean they should be credited more than is deserved.  'Spiderland' is nothing like true Mathrock.

That's because Spiderland is "true" post-rock in the purest sense of the word, as are the latter two Talk Talk albums.

OK, but Postrock is not Mathrock.. the two have almost nothing to do with each other except for era and national origin

No I think he was just trying to point out that Spiderland is over estimated as a math rock influential album when it's not even math rock in general. No real argument towards you or anyone, unless that provoked anyone otherwise, and I agree with him.

sorry for interrupting you guys, I'm shouting to Jody: I simply ADORE pop-side of the Talkies, almost as much as their latter attempts. The Party's Over, Renee, Tomorrow's Started, Such a Shame, Happiness is Easy, Time is Time...If anyone needs intelligent pop-music from 80s TALK TALK is the best choice!

I just picked up It's My Life yesterday. It has been ages since I heard that album.

Are any of you familiar with Mark Hollis' only solo album? It's a natural extension of the experimentation and minimalism that he began with Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock and I highly recommend it if you like those two albums.

You might have missed it Jody, but I loved Colour of Spring on first listen.

I proposed him for inclusion and wrote the first review I'm afraid it's still the only one that hangs there...not? "Mark Hollis" sounds even more quiet than late Talkies, I like it a lot

So for me, it's Laughing Stock: yes, Spirit of Eden: no, and Spiderland: no. Laughing Stock is incredible, though, and the definition of underrated masterpiece.

And I can't wait for the new Grails and the new Hammock!

I'm surprised you like Laughing Stock but not Spirit of Eden.  Obviously, LS is better, but Spirit of Eden is so similar, and sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good...

And Spiderland is great, though inferior to both Talk Talk albums mentioned.

Grails are making a new album?? Sweet! I really liked Burning Off Impurities and I hope their next album takes that same direction.

I like Hammock's  shoegazer-ish post-rock or whatever. Its very trance inducing and great for late-night listens.

Spirit of Eden has some great ambience (especially "Rainbow"), but it didn't seem very focused to me. That blasted blues part near the end of the second song, I think, pretty much ruined the entire album. Then there was that synth part in one of the songs and the vocalist's parts seemed a bit exaggerated. Laughing Stock, on the other hand, had none of these vices. It is way more focused and everything is so downtempo. My favorite moments are when it gets quiet and then either the strings or brass fade-in. Ooooooooooohhh!!!!

Slint is okay and I definitely respect them for their influential album. Another early post-rock album that might not be anywhere near as influential but is interesting nonetheless is the only album by Rodan. It's sort of a mash-up between early post-rock and some pretty angry hardcore parts.

Hammock is quickly becoming my favorite post-gaze (ha ha!) band. It's sooooooooooo beautiful, I don't even know what to say!!

Grails is another favorite as I enjoy their elements of dark ethnic music. It's a refreshing approach to post-rock despite the fact that I'm not picky about the genre at all (I think there have only been two post-rock bands I haven't liked so far).

You need to visit Grails myspace site for a track of their new album, Take Refuge in Clean Living, due out May 13th.

I posted earlier about it - very much looking forward to it.
