Just saw "True Grit" and was not disappointed.  I was looking forward to the Coen's more-faithful-to-the-book take on the classic western and they really knocked it out of the park.  Fantastic acting (wasn't a Damon fan going in but he did a damn fine job) and beautifully shot this should serve to prove that a great western can still be made.  I think even old John Wayne would be fully enjoy this version.

A Serious Man: Another devastatingly funny movie from the Coen Brothers. Burn After Reading was good, but not that good, but this is a return to form for their depiction of the horrifying chaos of life. They sure do like making movies about '60s through '80s, though. 9/10

Agreed, what a great film. It would have snatched the major Oscars, if not for No Country For Old Men getting them back in 2007.

I doubt it. Even if it had been a much worse movie, The Hurt Locker had to win just so Hollywood could stick it to James Cameron.  And, despite Kathryn's pretensions of being "indie" since she had some trouble getting funding, once she actually got the money she made a movie that's practically begging for an Oscar. Not as hard as Crash (2004) was, which wanted an Oscar so badly it neglected being good or even slightly watchable (but it won anyway!!), but still. I still liked it a lot, and at the time I supported it because the only other 2009 movie I had seen was District 9, which was really kind of lame after the first 20 minutes, but I agree with you now that A Serious Man should have won Best Picture.

I still need to see that movie but I've heard excellent things about it.  The Coen Brothers really are some talented directors.

I agree, The Hurt Locker is the kind of film that has "Oscars" written all over it, while A Serious Man doesn't even have a good rating on IMDB. But maybe there's also another factor. If the Academy still didn't award the Coens with the occasion of NCFOM, there would have been a "pressure" to award them for their huge merits as a whole sometime in the future, as a compensation , and that would have raised the chances of A Serious Man or other of their future films.

That's a fair point, which I wasn't thinking of when I wrote it. It's unsurprising that A Serious Man is so polarizing among normal people when there was such a backlash as something so obvious as the ending of No Country. It's funny how so many of the negative reviews complain that the characters are even more unlikeable than in Burn After Reading and the reviewer felt no connection to them because s/he's not a Jew from the Midwest 1960s. Maybe it's just because I'm generally knowledgable about Western religion so I understood the terminology, but I didn't find the setting alienating at all and I was interested in the characters, despite nothing happening. I've only ever known one Jewish family, and their father is friends with my uncle so I didn't see them very often, and they're not very orthodox. Maybe it's because I can watch this movie and not take it as an indictment of the whole Jewish people. And I guess the average person is probably more cheerful than I am...

However, there were two pretty big mistakes that I was surprised by, since the Coens' typically pay such close attention to detail. In the tooth story, the Hebrew characters should have been embossed on the mold the plaster would have flowed into the engraving. And I didn't notice it during the movie, but it's egregious as a music fan: Abraxas and Cosmo's Factory were both released in 1970! 

Kevin, you should see it, I can't remember other movies you like right now but I think you would be willing to embrace the despair.

I didn't really like the first half of A Serious Man, but I didn't finish it I guess so it could be good.

As a general rule, I don't like boring films about boring people and boring lives, even if the actors are really convincingly boring.

Thanks David. Last evening I saw How To Train Your Dragon. Great dramatic moments and incredible visuals, plus a dragon with high iconic potential - could become a public favourite like Totoro, the Shreks, clown fish, penguins, etc.
