Nooo!!!
I wrote you a nice paragraph on what I think is post-rock and I deleted it.Cry I'm really sorry for that.

EDIT:
Although I wrote a paragraph of my opinions the main idea I was trying to send was that the main characteristcs of the bands is that they're (mostly) guitar based bands that make atmospheric music.

The Silo?

A silo is to do with grain and stuff isn't it?

Or is silo not the same as silo in English?  Help us Assaf!

silo traslates from French into the same word in English:

si·lo /Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[sahy-loh] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation noun, plural -los, verb, -loed, -lo·ing.
–noun 1. a structure, typically cylindrical, in which fodder or forage is kept.
2. a pit or underground space for storing grain, green feeds, etc.
3. Military. an underground installation constructed of concrete and steel, designed to house a ballistic missile and the equipment for firing it.
–verb (used with object) 4. to put into or preserve in a silo.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Origin: 1825–35; < Sp: place for storing grain, hay, etc., orig. subterranean; ulterior orig. uncert.]

but maybe it has to do with the etymology of 'subterranean?' The Silo literally seems pretty weird! Maybe they mean The Underground?

Too bad! Sorry about that! ;(

But: This is cool! Thanks Chamberry! All the definitions I read over the years - well, it seemed that it could really cross over into avant or something..I wondered what specifically put certain music there, and I thought it must be the TYPE of sound..You just cleared that up - it seems it is/was! [Now, I just have to hear enough samples that I can really know what this [type of] sound is...!]

I was thinking it may refer to a bunker.  They have silos in the computer game Starcraft and they're like bunkers.

So it could refer to that meaning, rather than the grain storage.

Claire, Post-rock is quite varied to my ears.  You have the ambient bands, like Sigur Rós and Godspeed You Black Emperor! (the latter do get heavier though) and then you have the slightly more aggressive bands, like Mogwai.  I believe I prefer the heavier side myself.

Then there is post-metal, which often has post-rock stylistics.  Pelican and Red Sparowes come to mind here.

No problem Listennow801. Although I would've liked that you could have read my thoughts on the subject.

There are some bands that I could concidere them being some sort of an avant-garde post-rock and World's End Girlfriend is one of them. The album "The Lie Lay Land" is a very "free" album and unpredictable as well. It has a lot of different instruments and has a cinematic feel to it.

Check it out whenever you have the time.

Ruben, I'm after post-rock more in the style of Bossk and Pelican, can you help me?  I find Godspeed a bit boring and noodly for my tastes.  I want shorter and heavier compositions, with maybe a bit of avant-garde too.

Thanks!

Have you tried other bands from the post-metal genre? It's pretty hard to come by an avant-garde type post-rock band since most of them are more melodic in nature, but the one I know that fits quite nicely to your needs is Kayo Dot. Check out any of their two releases. Both are, In my opinion, five star albums.

Aside from Kayo Dot I could recommend  Callisto - Noir and Isis - Panopticon. If you don't enjoy growls that much then Russian Circle is another good band to check out.

I know very little about this genre compared to other members, but I think those bands would be of your interest.

Oh, I have two Maudlin of the Well albums to listen to, I'll start with them.  I've heard some Kayo Dot samples a while back and they pretty cool.

I've heard of Isis, I'll try and get some of their stuff.  My local store has some Pelican and Red Sparowes too.

Obviously I am aware it's post-metal, but some of it is close to post-rock to my ears.  I want stuff that sounds like a local band called Old School Tie.  Now they're a great post-rock band in my opinion.  I'll try and send you some of their stuff, although I don't have their latest albums.

Well, well... I go out for an hour, and you are off talking about Post Metal and Post Rock???

Great!

Neurosis - Souls At Zero, Solstafir - Masterpiece of Bitterness, God Is An Astronaut - (can't remember the name exactly, but has something with All is ___ All is Bright) and others as well.

Love those types of music.

You have a whole thread for it, by the way, where Ruben has many great suggestions as well as other people.

Oh I know there is, but I don't visit the Zeuhl or Post-Rock threads in fear of my back balance. LOL

Been going over our list to vote tonight, and so far heard Magical Power Mako, which while good I am not convinced belongs here.
Also heard two other very good stuff - Pak - Motel and also pochakaite malko - laya. Both I voted yes, vey nice rio (the first) and nice eclectic avantgardish (the second).

Nice sig, Joren. LOL

I have Pocket Orchestra's album, but I haven't listened to it yet.

You mean Charles Krafft's Hitler Teapot? Yeah, I decided to remove it, for it might be a bit too provocative as a signature. It's an interesting work of art though...

Let me put that a bit more precise: I'm not losing the joy of listening to music, I just don't really enjoy to listen to all those obscure (and sometimes second-rate) RIO/Avant/Zeuhl-groups anymore. Wink

If you're losing the joy of listening to music altogether, I think you should really take some action! Shocked

And everyone should chip in. And I have my hopes in Claire and Chris who know this field so well.

And yes we might include Zeuhl as well, while we're at it.

This reminds me:

it currently says on the website:

Pronunciation: zEU(h)l, while the EU are like a French E with a slight U, and the (h) is a semi-silent letter which is an integrated part of the EU, totaling in a "syllable and a half".

I think it should be added that the "z" is pronounced as a German "z", sounding more like "ts".
