Might get scolded by some mini-dictator or whoever runs the place because they're on one of those worthless power trips. Unless you already think everyone involved is chill enough to not care.

I concur, but it goes by songs so I can play a lot of epics of mine and short ass songs of theirs. They had some folk and good indie, so it isn't THAT bad. I'll probably play all my stuff anyway and see what happens.
|
But good indie doesn't exist.
|
That's like listening to Rush, Kansas, ELP and Dream Theater and concluding prog rock sucks.
|
Those are four of the best prog bands.
|
Rush are okay, but totally not representative of prog. Kansas, ELP, DT have some okay stuff but there is way better out there in my opinion. Good indie is definitely better, although I prefer prog overall.

I disagree. Their impact particularly over in the Western Hemisphere was amazing, and they managed to continue being creative even during the 1980s without completely going pop. Kansas's first five albums similar to Rush. After that, not so much. ELP... not representative of prog? What are you smoking there? Dream Theater... pretty much THE prog metal band. Again... doesn't matter if you like them or not, but there is a reason for that.

Never said ELP aren't representative of prog, but I could say they aren't representative of good prog. ;) and Rush is debatable. Most of their albums and popular songs aren't really prog but you can say the same about Yes and Genesis I suppose. I have quite a bit of Kansas on vinyl, it's okay but I never really considered them prog... and if they are then Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin are just as prog (and according to PA, almost everything is). Dream Theater is musical masterbation lubed up guitar heroes on speed jacked up on drugs playing music that induces headaches, if that constitutes as prog for you then okay sure, fine. It's all subjective anyway, and if you disagree then your subjectivity sucks (in my subjective view of my own subjectivity). :P

Et? 2112... really just a very good rock album with length additions in the middle and some artsy touches on the second side. AFTK... yeah, more noticeable for the sound effects, and breaking away from the rock arrangements. Surprisingly complex pop songs in there, too. Hemispheres... sides from La Ville Strangiato, I'm not seeing that much that's really new, though the band itself is moving on a little in terms of what it's using. Now, if we just had Caress Of Steel, I wouldn't have argued :p

It almost sounds like you're suggesting that Yes and Genesis aren't prog bands to an extent. Am I reading too much into it?

Maybe I can play really bad music like Limp Bizkit just so my music sounds that much better in comparison.

Listen to Tarkus or Karn Evil 9.
and Rush is debatable. Most of their albums and popular songs aren't really prog but you can say the same about Yes and Genesis I suppose.
Rush's material was just as prog as Genesis's or Yes's, if not more. At least they never completely ignored making decent music (even Presto and Test for Echo aren't near as bad as Big Generator or Invisible Touch) and their impact upon music was arguably as big as Genesis and Yes's, if not more.
I have quite a bit of Kansas on vinyl, it's okay but I never really considered them prog... and if they are then Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin are just as prog (and according to PA, almost everything is).
Wow. That's ignorance. Listen to "Song for America" title track, "Magnum Opus", "Miracles out of Nowhere", "Incomudro", or "The Pinnacle" and THEN tell me that. Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin never approached those tracks at ALL in progginess.
Whatever you think. Scenes from a Memory is a modern masterpiece and "Octavarium" (the song) alone is definitely completely prog.

of course not, but one could argue anything if they really wanted to and still be convinced they're correct. In short, I try not to even go by genres anymore (I used to be more of a prog elitist but now I know better), but they are helpful sometimes.
