Name some of your favorite 'prog metal' bands so I can get a sense of who we are talking about.

^ I don't have any. But even if I did, what would my favorites have to do with it? I'm simply implying that saying that Opeth isn't prog means questioning the metal categorization that some folks here committed to, and I'm pretty sure they did so for a reason or two.

So.... you don't like Opeth then....?
I'm not saying Opeth isn't prog....I'm saying I don't care for that death metal voice in some of those bands and the loud chug chug guitar sound at times.....and I'm glad to see that Opeth has moved on somewhat with Heritage.
As far as classifications.....I disagree with many of the way some of these bands are labeled but that's my choice...ain't it?

But anyway,

I don't like Cannibal Corpse because their lyrics are extremely sick.

Same with Tool, Only they aren't as offensive.

And also I'm no longer a fan of Aerosmith or ZZ Top because songs like "My Fist Your Face" and "Francene" are tasteless drivel IMHO.

Don't even get me started on Train.

^ When it comes to music I'm very easily offended.

I just think that there are certain subject matters that should not be mentioned in songs.

The particular songs by Aerosmith and ZZ Top I mentioned I dislike because they condone very bad things.

Most like Gentle Giant and VDGG....but even though I own 6 or 7 cd's by both I rarely play them.
Also there seems to be a large crowd who like RPItaliano but again while I have something by all the major RPI bands i don't really 'get into them' very much except for one or two PFM lp's.

Other than that, I'm pretty easy going & catholic in my tastes. Wink

[/QUOTE] Me too, I don't see the appeal in BD - never, ever have I enjoyed a single second of what I've heard from him.

That's what I'd rather do than listen to Dob Dylan.....

I think if I related to his words, I might be able to find something worth bothering with.....but, you know....meh!

Pretty much every album from PTree, with the exception of the last one, sounds totally different to the previous, they've covered so many different styles, from psych-pop, ambient, electronic, dance, indie-pop, gothic.....might be best to give them another try!

I've never seen what other people seem to see in Porcupine Tree either.

A lot of zeuhl and krautrock, most of prog metal, and all of post-rock/math rock and tech/extreme metal etc. Ah, also bland "alterna-prog" a la Radiohead, Oceansize and Anathema. All of that stuff I mentioned is too repetitive, and some of it just dreary and sloppy. It's also all undeniably lacking in dynamics, save for post-rock (which is dynamics and nothing else). It's also all undeniably lacking in melody/harmony (save for certain zeuhl, at least with harmony)... hmm, it's almost like it's just bad music.

Then there are things like, I prefer pop over punk/post-punk. I also dislike Hendrix, although he's ok sometimes. Too much "wah wah", not enough song (pretty great wah wah though).
